Chapter 5 - The Viper in the Lobby

-5-

The ground floor of Mercy General Hospital was a bustling labyrinth of stressed nurses, frantic family members, and tired patients shuffling past vending machines. But when Bianca Romano stepped through the sliding glass automatic doors, the entire atmosphere of the lobby seemed to freeze.

She wore an immaculate ivory trench coat, oversized Chanel sunglasses that hid half her face, and knee-high leather boots that clicked sharply against the polished marble floor. Two burly men in dark suits flanked her sides—Boston enforcers masquerading as bodyguards.

At the security desk, a young receptionist looked up nervously from her computer. “Ma’am? Visitors must check in at—”

“Save your breath, darling,” Bianca interrupted, her voice a cool, dripping melody with just a hint of a Boston accent. She slid her sunglasses down the bridge of her nose, fixing the receptionist with a predatory stare. “I’m here to see room 412. Serena Moretti.”

“I’m sorry, Ms. Romano, but room 412 is under strict restricted access,” the receptionist stammered, frantically tapping her keyboard. “Only immediate family and cleared legal counsel are—”

“I am family,” Bianca purred, leaning over the counter so her face was inches from the glass partition. “Or at least, I will be very soon. Now, open the elevator gates, or I’ll have my associates here explain to you why a hospital shouldn't have so many broken windows.”

Before the terrified receptionist could reach for her panic button, a heavy hand dropped onto Bianca’s shoulder.

“You won't be needing the elevator, Bianca,” a cold, deep voice echoed from behind her.

Bianca froze. She slowly turned her head, her pristine composure cracking just a fraction as she looked up into the dark, murderous eyes of Lucian Moretti.

Lucian stood there flanked by Mateo and four of his most lethal Manhattan enforcers. He hadn't slept; the shadows beneath his eyes were bruised and dark, and his suit jacket was half-buttoned, as if he had sprinted out of the penthouse the moment he learned she was in the city.

“Lucian, darling!” Bianca recovered instantly, flashing a brilliant, theatrical smile as she reached out to stroke his lapel. “I heard the news in Sicily. I flew straight here to be with you. That ungrateful wife of yours—she’s trying to ruin everything you’ve built! We need to stick together—”

Lucian grabbed her wrist.

He didn't squeeze gently. His fingers clamped around her thin wrist with a vice-like grip that made Bianca gasp in genuine pain, her smile instantly vanishing.

“You stupid, arrogant bitch,” Lucian hissed, his voice dropping into a register so low and terrifying that the patients sitting nearby instinctively shrank away. “You and your father thought you could use my absence to sink my marriage, frame me for an open affair, and force my hand on the port acquisitions?”

“Lucian, what are you talking about?!” Bianca cried out, her voice pitching upward in genuine panic as Mateo stepped forward, blocking the exits. “Your father-in-law’s old syndicate partners—they set this up! They wanted to destroy Serena so you’d be vulnerable!”

“My wife isn't vulnerable,” Lucian snarled, shaking her wrist so hard her designer bag slipped from her shoulder and hit the marble floor with a sharp thud. “My wife just locked down every bank account, shell company, and municipal bribe my family has operated for thirty years. She’s sitting on the fourth floor right now holding a federal indictment with my name on it—and it’s all because you couldn't keep your mouth shut about our so-called ‘business arrangement’ in Sicily!”

Bianca’s eyes widened in horror. The realization hit her like a physical blow: she wasn't playing a chess game to become queen of Manhattan; she and her father had just walked right into a trap engineered by a woman they had profoundly underestimated.

“If you go up to that room, Bianca,” Lucian whispered, leaning in so close his lips brushed her ear, “my wife’s private security will put a bullet between your eyes before you even reach the fourth-floor corridor. And I won't lift a finger to stop them.”

He shoved her back toward the sliding glass doors so hard she stumbled against her bodyguards, nearly losing her balance in her designer boots.

“Get out of my city,” Lucian commanded, turning his back on her as he walked toward the private elevator bank. “And if your father calls my phone again, tell him I’m coming to Boston with an army.”
