Chapter 10 - Confronting the Enemy

Mr. Graves moved in front of me.

Victor Hale smiled.

“Hello, Nathaniel.”

Mr. Graves’s voice was ice cold.

“You should have stayed dead.”

Victor laughed.

“People like me don’t die.”

He looked around Mr. Graves.

Then his eyes landed on me.

“Ruby.”

I grabbed Mr. Graves’s sleeve.

Victor smiled wider.

“Your mother has been very difficult to find.”

Mr. Graves stepped forward.

“You won’t touch her.”

Victor tilted his head.

“I don’t need to.”

He reached into his coat.

Dr. Mercer shouted.

“Get down!”

But Victor didn’t pull out a weapon.

He pulled out a photograph.

He held it up.

My mother was standing beside a woman.

A woman who looked older than the baby in the photograph.

But I recognized her instantly.

The eyes.

The smile.

The silver bracelet.

Rebecca.

My sister.

Alive.

I stepped forward.

“Where is she?”

Victor smiled.

“Safe.”

“Where?”

“Somewhere your mother can never reach.”

Mr. Graves clenched his fists.

“What do you want?”

Victor looked at him.

“The evidence.”

“What evidence?”

“The original records.”

Mr. Graves shook his head.

“You’ll never get them.”

Victor sighed.

“Then I suppose Ruby will have to pay for your stubbornness.”

He turned toward his car.

Then stopped.

“Oh, Nathaniel?”

Mr. Graves looked at him.

Victor smiled.

May you like

“Check your wallet.”

Then he drove away.
