Chapter 9 - The Chase Through The Tunnels

Suddenly, the lights came back on.The hallway outside erupted with shouting.
Mr. Graves immediately grabbed my hand.
“Stay with me.”
We ran toward the private elevator.
Dr. Mercer followed.
“Where are we going?”
“Out.”
“But the doors are locked.”
“I know.”
Mr. Graves pressed a hidden button.
A section of the wall opened.
Behind it was a narrow passage.
I stared.
“You have secret tunnels?”
He gave me the faintest smile.
“Being rich has its disadvantages.”
We hurried through the passage.
Behind us, someone shouted.
“CHECK THE OFFICE!”
Mr. Graves pushed me forward.
“Faster.”
We reached a steel door.
He entered a code.
The door opened into an underground parking garage.
A black car waited nearby.
But before we could reach it, headlights appeared at the opposite end.
Another vehicle entered.
Mr. Graves stopped.
The other car stopped too.
For a moment, neither vehicle moved.
Then the driver’s door opened.
A man stepped out.
Tall.
Gray coat.
White scar above his eyebrow.

My stomach dropped.
“The man from our apartment,” I whispered.
