Part 6: The True Harbor

The double oak doors of the boardroom burst open, and three uniform officers moved into the suite with total, tactical synchronization. Rebecca began to weep hysterically as the steel handcuffs clicked into place over her designer bracelets, while my parents were escorted out through the executive elevators, their heads held down to avoid the corporate security cameras.

I didn't watch them go. I walked out of the tower, leaving the ruins of the Hale family empire behind me without a single backward glance.

An hour later, I sat on the back porch of my own quiet, sunlit home on the outskirts of the city. The air was warm, and the only sound was the gentle rustle of the oak trees in the yard.

Lily was sitting in the grass, carefully building a small fortress out of wooden blocks. Her yellow dress had been replaced with her favorite blue overalls, and though the faint red mark on her cheek remained, the terror in her eyes had been entirely replaced by a quiet, steady peace.

She looked up, her small brown eyes catching mine, and for the first time in two years, a genuine, radiant smile broke across her face.

"Daddy?" she called out, holding up a small green block. "Is this a safe house?"

I walked down the steps, kneeling in the grass beside her, and pulled her gently against my chest, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of her heart.

"The safest house in the world, sweetheart," I whispered, kissing the top of her head as I looked up at the clear, open sky. "And nobody is ever going to make you say sorry for being whole again."
