Chapter 1 - THE DISMANTLING OF THE BELLINI EMPIREThe chandelier in the grand dining room of the Moretti Chicago estate didn't just cast light—it seemed to weigh down the air itself. Thirty pairs of elite, expensive eyes watched Luca Moretti. In the underworld, men spoke of Luca with a quiet, terrified reverence. He was a man who built a sprawling logistics and real estate empire out of absolute silence and absolute precision.

And right now, that precision was splintering.

"Get security," Luca said. His voice wasn’t loud. It didn't boom. But the acoustic weight of it made the head of his private detail, a scarred veteran named Marko, step forward instantly before the sentence even finished landing.

"Mr. Moretti," Vanessa Bellini choked out, her manicured fingers digging into the edge of the mahogany table so hard her knuckles turned the color of bone. Her red silk gown, designed to make her look like the reigning queen of Chicago high society, suddenly looked like a shroud. "You aren't listening to her. This girl—this emotional, unstable girl—is spinning a narrative because she resents me. She’s always resented me stepping into your life."

Emily flinched, pulling back slightly against her father’s shoulder. Luca’s arm tightened around his daughter, an iron band shielding her from the woman he had spent the last two years courting.

"Shut up, Vanessa," Luca said, his gaze locked onto his fiancée. It was the calm before a category-five storm. "Marko. Secure the perimeter of the Maple Street house. Now. No one enters. No one leaves. If a stray cat steps foot on that property without my express authorization, you find out who sent it."

"Right away, boss," Marko muttered, whipping out a satellite-encrypted radio as he backed out of the room.

"Luca, you're making a mistake," Vanessa hissed, taking a desperate step forward. The remaining thirty guests—politicians, judges, syndicate captains—were frozen in their seats, too terrified to chew, let alone breathe. "We have three hundred guests arriving for the formal reception in two hours. The mayor is coming. The district attorney—"

"Let them come," Luca interrupted, his eyes narrowing to cold gray slits. "Let them see what happens when someone tries to steal from a Moretti."

He turned his attention back to Emily, his voice softening instantly—a jarring, heartbreaking transition that proved Vanessa’s earlier manipulations were entirely built on sand.

"Em," Luca whispered, pressing a kiss to the top of his daughter's head. "Are you alright? Are you and the baby safe?"

"I am now, Dad," Emily sobbed softly, the tears finally breaking free. "I was so scared. When they sent those men to the house yesterday... they didn't just talk about inspections, Dad. They flashed badges. Private security badges with the Bellini crest watermark on the back of their clipboards."

The room went dead silent.

Vanessa’s knees buckled slightly. She caught herself against the back of an empty chair. The Bellini crest. Her family’s private security firm—a tier-one mercenary group her father had run before passing the reins to her ruthless younger brother, Julian.

"Julian," Luca breathed, the name tasting like poison on his tongue. "Your brother knew about the house?"

"Julian knows everything," a new voice echoed from the heavy arched double doors at the end of the hall.

Everyone turned.

Stepping out of the shadows of the foyer was a tall, immaculate man wearing an obsidian-tailored suit. His dark hair was slicked back, and a cold, predatory smile played across his lips. Behind him stood four armed men in plainclothes, their hands resting casually near their waistbands.

Julian Bellini had arrived early for the engagement dinner. And he brought an army.
