Chapter 3

My mother-in-law hadn’t been cruel to me out of mere spite. She was deliberately trying to break my spirit so I’d pack my bags and walk away empty-handed.
The next morning, before walking into the kitchen, I overheard Mark talking to his mother over coffee.
“The money Brenda needs is just one part of it,” Mark said quietly. “The main goal is making sure Laura can’t touch our capital when the divorce goes through.”
“How are you going to guarantee that?” Ofelia asked.
Mark let out a cold laugh. “For the last six months, I’ve been wiring funds to a shell corporation owned by Greg, my buddy from college. We logged it as ‘strategic consulting fees.’ Laura hasn’t noticed a thing.”
I leaned against the hallway wall, taking a slow breath.
Oh, I noticed.
Ever since they attempted to isolate me from the office, I had flagged those peculiar invoices. I had already pulled tax copies and traced Greg’s shell company.
Just then, my cell phone vibrated in my pocket. It was Andrew.
“Laura, Brenda just admitted why she’s so desperate,” Andrew whispered. “She owes over two hundred thousand dollars to private lenders and gambling debts. And it gets worse: Mark signed as a co-guarantor on her loans.”
I closed my eyes.
My husband had tried to leverage my father’s home to pay off a mistress’s gambling debts.
Andrew added: “And Brenda claims Ofelia took a cut of the wired cash, too.”
Standing in that hallway, I realized this was no longer just a failing marriage.

It was an organized, systematic raid on everything I had built.
And I already knew exactly where I was going to stop them.
