Chapter 5

Margaret turned to look at Mark. “She’s married?”
Mark opened his mouth, but no sound came out.
Ofelia grabbed Brenda’s arm. “You told us you were legally separated!”
“And you told me Laura was leaving the house with nothing!” Brenda fired back, her voice cracking.
Mark stood up, shouting, “Shut up, Brenda!”
I laid a thick binder flat on the dining table. “No. Nobody is staying quiet today.”
I distributed copies of the forensic audit to everyone at the table.
“Over six months, Mark authorized over eighty thousand dollars in direct transfers to Brenda,” I explained clearly. “He also purchased an eighteen-thousand-dollar luxury watch using company funds.”
Julian scanned the bank statements, his jaw tightening as he slammed his hand on the table. “You siphoned money out of the corporate emergency reserves for your mistress, Mark?!”
“I was the Managing Director!” Mark yelled defensively. “I had the authority to move company funds!”
Stephen Vance stepped forward, opening his briefcase. “You were the Managing Director, Mr. Sterling.”
Mark spun around. “Who the hell are you?”
“I am Laura’s corporate counsel, and as of this week, legal representative for the majority shareholder.” Stephen presented the certified board minutes. “An extraordinary shareholder meeting was executed per corporate bylaws. Your executive powers have been revoked, your appointment as CEO is terminated, and the financial institutions have been officially notified.”
“That’s impossible! It’s my company!” Mark stammered.
Stephen slid the original corporate charter across the table. “Seventy percent belongs to Laura. Thirty percent belongs to you.”
“My father provided the startup capital on that exact condition,” I added calmly.
Mark glared at me with pure venom. “You were just a clerk pushing paper!”
“Those ‘papers’ ensured payroll was met, taxes were paid, and vendors were satisfied,” I replied. “I never minimized your contribution, Mark. But you tried to erase mine entirely.”
Brenda let out a bitter laugh, turning to Mark. “So you weren’t even the actual owner?”
Mark glared at her. “I did all of this for you!”
“No, you didn’t,” Brenda spat. “You did it because you loved feeling like a big shot.”
Andrew laid another document on the table. “And while we’re discussing power, Mark, explain this to your family.”
It was the co-guarantor contract where Mark had assumed legal liability for Brenda’s two-hundred-thousand-dollar private gambling debts.
Mark went ghostly pale. “You told me that money was to open a boutique salon!”
Brenda shrugged apathetically. “You signed the paperwork without reading it.”
“You were using me!” Mark roared.
“I needed to clear my debts,” Brenda replied coldly. “You wanted a younger woman to inflate your ego. We both lied.”
Ofelia panicked, pointing a trembling finger at Brenda. “This woman manipulated everyone! Get her out of my house!”
Brenda turned on her. “Are you really going to pretend you’re innocent, Ofelia?”
I pulled out the wire receipt for the hundred-thousand-dollar transfer. “There’s no need to guess. Here is the direct transfer Ofelia received from Brenda.”
Brenda pointed to the retirement brochure resting on the counter. “That was the down payment for her luxury retirement suite in Florida. She promised to help push Laura out and locate the property deeds in exchange for the cash.”

“I was just securing my future!” Ofelia wailed.
“With embezzled money,” Julian said, looking at his mother with disgust.
