Chapter 5 - Healing and Truth

Allison kept his card in her purse for 7 days before calling.
They met at Papago Park.
Lily ran after birds nearby while Allison finally asked the question that had been bothering her all week.
“Why did you care so much about someone you didn’t know?”
Marcus touched the scar near his temple.
“When I was 14, my mother married a man everyone thought was respectable. In public, he smiled and shook hands. In private, he humiliated her, controlled everything she did, and constantly told her she would be nothing without him.”
Allison looked down.
“One night, I tried to defend her. He threw me into a glass table. That’s where this scar came from.”
“Did she leave him?”
“Yes.”
Marcus paused.
“But not soon enough. She finally left when I was old enough to work and help support her. By then, something inside her was already broken. She died young. The doctors called it heart disease. I always believed fear helped destroy her too.”
He looked toward Lily.
“At that party, I saw my mother’s eyes in yours. But I also saw something my mother took years to find.”
“What?”
“You stood back up.”
Allison said nothing.
“Before you thought about your own humiliation, you thought about Lily. You took the frosting Jason used to degrade you and turned it into something sweet so your daughter wouldn’t remember that moment only as terror.”
Allison struggled to breathe evenly.
“I wasn’t brave. I was just being her mother.”
“That’s what bravery looks like sometimes.”
From then on, Marcus began spending time with them without trying to force himself into their lives.
He brought pastries.
He listened patiently to Lily’s endless stories.
He never insulted Jason in front of her.

Allison needed months before she truly trusted him.
But slowly, she remembered how peaceful it could feel to stand beside a man who didn’t demand obedience, didn’t control her, and didn’t need to make her smaller in order to feel important.
