Chapter 1 – The Wedding That Ended Before the Vows

The bells of St. Augustine's Cathedral rang across the city just as the afternoon sun spilled through the stained-glass windows, painting the marble floor in brilliant shades of gold, crimson, and sapphire.

Nearly four hundred guests had gathered for what every magazine had already labeled the wedding of the year.

Fresh white roses lined the aisle.

Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead.

A string quartet played softly from the balcony.

Outside, luxury cars stretched for blocks, while reporters crowded behind velvet barriers hoping to catch a glimpse of the influential Lancaster family.

Everything looked perfect.

Until Victoria Lancaster stood up.

Emma Carter stood at the end of the aisle, her hands trembling slightly around a bouquet of ivory roses.

Her wedding gown wasn't extravagant.

She had refused the custom-made dress worth over one hundred thousand dollars that Victoria had ordered.

Instead, she chose a simple satin gown sewn by an elderly seamstress who had raised her after the death of her foster mother.

"It feels like me," Emma had told Ethan.

"I don't want to wear a dress that hides who I am."

Ethan had smiled.

"You could wear blue jeans and I'd still think you're the most beautiful woman in the world."

Now he stood beneath the cathedral's towering archway, unable to take his eyes off her.

For one brief moment, the world disappeared.

No reporters.

No shareholders.

No expectations.

Only the woman he loved.

The officiant smiled warmly.

"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today—"

A sharp voice shattered the silence.

"No!"

Every head turned.

Victoria Lancaster rose from the front pew with a face as cold as polished marble.

She wore an elegant navy-blue designer suit, pearls around her neck, and an expression that made even seasoned businessmen uncomfortable.

"I refuse to allow this marriage."

The quartet stopped playing.

The officiant blinked in confusion.

"Mrs. Lancaster—"

"I said no."

Her voice echoed through the cathedral.

Guests shifted uneasily.

Whispers spread from pew to pew.

Ethan stepped forward.

"Mother."

Victoria ignored him.

Instead, she walked slowly toward Emma.

Each click of her high heels echoed like a countdown.

Emma swallowed hard but refused to move.

Victoria stopped only inches away.

"So..."

She looked Emma up and down.

"This is the girl who thinks she deserves my family."

Emma answered quietly.

"I love your son."

Victoria laughed.

"No."

"You love what his last name can buy."

The room fell silent.

Emma lowered her eyes for only a second.

Then she looked back up.

"I've never asked Ethan for money."

"No."

Victoria smiled thinly.

"You were smarter than that."

"You made him believe you didn't have to."

Several guests exchanged uncomfortable glances.

The groom's father, Charles Lancaster, remained seated without saying a word.

His face revealed nothing.

But his fingers tightened around the edge of his chair.

Something about this confrontation made him strangely uneasy.

Ethan stepped between the two women.

"That's enough."

Victoria's eyes flashed.

"You dare speak to me like that?"

"I dare protect my future wife."

A murmur swept through the audience.

Emma gently touched Ethan's arm.

"It's okay."

He shook his head.

"No."

"It isn't."

Victoria folded her arms.

"You still don't understand."

She turned toward the guests.

"Do all of you know where she came from?"

Silence.

"She has no family."

"No inheritance."

"No respectable background."

"Nobody even knows who her real parents were."

Emma felt hundreds of eyes settle upon her.

Her cheeks burned.

She had lived with those questions her entire life.

Abandoned as an infant.

Raised in foster care.

Never knowing where she truly belonged.

Victoria's voice grew louder.

"My son was raised to lead one of the largest family businesses in this country."

"And this girl expects to become Mrs. Lancaster?"

Emma answered softly.

"I never expected anything."

"I only wanted Ethan."

Victoria stepped closer.

"You expect me to believe that?"

Emma didn't answer.

Sometimes silence carried more dignity than words.

Victoria mistook it for weakness.

She reached into her handbag and pulled out a thick envelope.

"I hired investigators."

The crowd gasped.

She scattered photographs across the marble floor.

Images of Emma working as a waitress.

Cleaning apartments during college.

Walking home in worn-out sneakers.

Visiting her foster mother's grave.

"There."

Victoria announced proudly.

"That is the woman trying to become part of this family."

Emma stared at the photographs.

Not one of them showed anything shameful.

Only years of hard work.

Long nights.

Loneliness.

Ethan looked at the pictures before slowly kneeling.

One by one, he gathered them from the floor.

He smiled.

"You paid investigators..."

"...to prove my fiancée is hardworking?"

A few guests couldn't suppress nervous laughter.

Victoria's face darkened.

"You think this is amusing?"

"I think it's pathetic."

Ethan stood.

"These photographs show the woman who worked three jobs to pay for nursing school."

"The woman who took care of her foster mother through cancer."

"The woman who volunteers every Sunday at the children's shelter."

He held up another picture.

"This one?"

"It shows Emma buying groceries."

He looked around the cathedral.

"You spent thousands of dollars proving she's a decent human being."

Several guests nodded quietly.

For the first time...

Victoria realized she was losing the room.

Her humiliation was becoming her own.

She couldn't allow that.

Not in front of investors.

Not in front of society.

Not in front of the cameras secretly recording every second.

Her voice became dangerously calm.

"If words won't expose you..."

"...perhaps the truth will."

Before anyone understood her intention...

Victoria grabbed Emma's arm.

Hard.

Emma gasped.

"Ethan—"

Victoria spun her around.

"What are you doing?" Ethan shouted.

Then—

With one violent movement—

Victoria seized the back of Emma's wedding gown.

The delicate satin tore apart with a loud ripping sound that echoed through the cathedral.

Gasps erupted everywhere.

The back of the dress fell open.

Emma instinctively crossed her arms over her chest, trembling.

Someone screamed.

Several women immediately looked away.

Others covered their mouths in horror.

Phones appeared above the crowd.

Recording.

Watching.

Capturing every humiliating second.

Victoria pointed at Emma.

"Look at her!"

"This shameless girl wanted to become one of us!"

Emma's breathing became uneven.

She had never felt so exposed.

So powerless.

So utterly alone.

But only for a moment.

Ethan reached her in two strides.

Without hesitation, he pulled off his tailored tuxedo jacket and gently wrapped it around Emma's shoulders.

His hands trembled with anger.

He held her close.

"You don't have to look at anyone."

"I'm here."

Emma buried her face against his chest.

"I'm sorry..."

He tilted her chin upward.

"You have nothing to apologize for."

Then Ethan slowly turned toward his mother.

For the first time in his life...

There was no fear in his eyes.

Only disappointment.

"You didn't humiliate Emma today."

"You humiliated yourself."

Victoria barely heard him.

Because her eyes had locked onto something else.

Just beneath the torn fabric...

On Emma's left shoulder blade...

Was a tiny faded birthmark.

Shaped exactly like a swallow in flight.

Victoria stopped breathing.

Her lips parted.

The cathedral disappeared around her.

The voices faded.

All she could see...

Was that tiny mark.

Her knees weakened.

"No..."

She whispered.

"That's impossible..."

The bouquet slipped from Emma's hands and landed softly on the marble floor.

Victoria took one shaky step closer.

Her fingers trembled as if reaching toward a ghost.

Tears filled her eyes without warning.

"No..."

"No..."

Her voice cracked.

"I buried you..."

The entire cathedral fell into stunned silence.

Charles Lancaster suddenly stood so abruptly that his chair crashed onto the floor.

His face had gone completely white.

"Victoria..."

He sounded frightened.

"Stop talking."

She didn't even hear him.

Her gaze never left Emma's shoulder.

Twenty-eight years of buried memories crashed into her mind.

A hospital room.

Smoke.

Fire alarms.

A crying newborn girl.

A nurse shouting.

And that tiny swallow-shaped birthmark.

Exactly the same.

Exactly where it had always been.

Victoria stumbled backward.

Her breathing turned ragged.

"It can't be..."

She looked at Emma...

Then at Ethan...

Then slowly turned toward Charles.

For the first time in nearly three decades...

She saw terror in her husband's eyes.

Real terror.

Not grief.

Not shock.

Fear.

A terrible truth rose inside her like a tidal wave.

She pointed a trembling finger toward Ethan.

Her voice barely emerged.

"If she is my daughter..."

Her tears finally fell.

"...then whose son..."

May you like

"...have we been raising?"

The cathedral exploded into chaos.
