Chapter 12 – Emma's Foster Mother Speaks

The rain returned the following evening.

Soft at first.

Then steady enough to blur the windows of the Donovan house into gray sheets of moving water.

Inside, laughter had finally begun to replace tears.

For the first time in nearly three decades, Ethan sat at a family dinner with the people who had spent twenty-eight years unknowingly searching for him.

Sarah insisted on cooking far too much food.

Jacob kept asking Ethan questions about his childhood.

Emma watched quietly, grateful that one broken family had finally begun to heal.

Yet one question continued to haunt her.

Who had brought her to Sarah Carter?

The answer had never appeared in any hospital record.

No adoption papers.

No legal documents.

Nothing.

Only silence.

Arthur Hale finally broke it.

"We've found someone."

Emma looked up.

"Who?"

Arthur closed the folder in front of him.

"Sarah Carter's attorney."

Emma frowned.

"My foster mother's lawyer?"

Arthur nodded.

"He contacted me this morning."

"He said Sarah left instructions."

Emma's heartbeat quickened.

"Instructions?"

Arthur looked directly at her.

"She recorded a statement."

Silence settled over the room.

Emma slowly stood.

"But..."

"My foster mother died two years ago."

Arthur nodded.

"She knew this day might come."

He reached into his briefcase.

Carefully...

He removed a small flash drive.

"She asked that this be given only if your biological family was ever found."

Emma stared at it.

The tiny piece of metal suddenly felt heavier than anything she had ever held.

An hour later...

Everyone gathered inside Arthur's office.

Only a handful of people were present.

Emma.

Ethan.

Victoria.

Sarah Donovan.

Jacob.

Agent Brooks.

Arthur connected the flash drive to a television.

The screen flickered.

For several seconds...

Nothing appeared.

Then...

A familiar face filled the room.

Sarah Carter.

Emma's foster mother.

She looked older than Emma remembered.

Her silver hair rested neatly over her shoulders.

A soft smile crossed her face.

She looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

"...it means the truth finally found you."

Emma immediately burst into tears.

"Mom..."

She whispered.

Sarah smiled gently.

"Hello, sweetheart."

"I wish I could hug you one more time."

She paused.

"If Arthur kept his promise..."

"...you're not watching this alone."

She looked toward the unseen audience.

"And if Emma has found her real family..."

"...then some very dangerous people have failed."

Agent Brooks exchanged a glance with Arthur.

Dangerous people?

Sarah continued.

"Emma..."

"I owe you an apology."

"I lied to you every day of your life."

Emma shook her head.

"No..."

"You protected me."

Sarah smiled sadly.

"I hope one day you'll believe that."

She folded her hands.

"The night of the hospital fire..."

"...someone knocked on my front door."

The room became completely silent.

Sarah continued.

"It was nearly four in the morning."

"I had been awake because my husband was working the night shift."

"I opened the door..."

"...and found a woman standing in the rain."

Emma leaned closer.

The woman on the screen took a slow breath.

"She was wearing a nurse's uniform."

"Her hands were covered in blood."

"And in her arms..."

"...she carried a newborn baby."

Emma covered her mouth.

Sarah's eyes filled with tears as she remembered.

"The baby wasn't crying."

"She was asleep."

"The nurse kept looking over her shoulder."

"Like someone was following her."

Arthur quietly asked,

"Margaret?"

Agent Brooks nodded.

"It had to be."

Sarah continued.

"The nurse begged me."

"'Please take her.'"

"'Don't ask questions.'"

"'If they find her...'"

Sarah's voice cracked.

"'They'll kill her.'"

Emma's heart pounded.

Sarah looked directly into the camera.

"I wanted to call the police."

"But the nurse grabbed my arm."

"She said something I'll never forget."

Sarah repeated the woman's exact words.

'The police are already involved.'

The room froze.

Agent Brooks slowly lowered his notebook.

Victoria whispered,

"My God..."

Sarah continued.

"The nurse handed me a small silver bracelet."

Emma immediately recognized it.

The bracelet engraved with one word.

Faith.

"I still have it."

Sarah smiled softly.

"I hid it where no one would ever think to look."

Emma looked toward Arthur.

"The cedar chest."

Arthur nodded.

"Exactly."

Sarah took a deep breath.

"The nurse also gave me one envelope."

"She ordered me never to open it unless Emma's life depended on it."

Emma frowned.

"An envelope?"

Arthur quietly reached beneath his desk.

"I believe..."

"...you're referring to this."

Everyone turned.

Arthur removed a sealed envelope from his safe.

Across the front...

Written in faded blue ink...

For Emma

Emma stared in disbelief.

"You've had that?"

Arthur nodded.

"Sarah gave it to me six months before she died."

"She made me swear never to open it."

Sarah continued speaking from the recording.

"If you're holding the envelope..."

"...then I'm sorry."

"It means the people who destroyed your family have finally caught up with you."

Emma slowly picked it up.

Her hands trembled.

She looked at Arthur.

"What if I'm not ready?"

Arthur smiled gently.

"You don't have to open it today."

Emma thought for a long moment.

Then shook her head.

"No."

"I've waited twenty-eight years."

She carefully broke the seal.

Inside...

There were three items.

A tiny hospital identification band.

A faded Polaroid photograph.

And one handwritten letter.

Emma picked up the photograph first.

It showed the mysterious nurse holding newborn Emma.

Standing beside her...

Was Sarah Carter.

Both women looked terrified.

On the back...

Someone had written:

She must never return until Edward is gone.

Victoria gasped.

"Edward."

Emma slowly unfolded the letter.

The handwriting wasn't Sarah's.

It belonged to Margaret Ellis.

The missing nurse.

Emma began reading aloud.

If this letter reaches you...

Then I failed to protect you myself.

Her voice trembled.

I didn't save you because I was brave.

I saved you because I couldn't live with what they planned.

Arthur leaned forward.

"What did they plan?"

Emma continued.

Charles believed you were being hidden.

He never knew the full truth.

Everyone looked at each other.

Charles had lied.

But perhaps...

He hadn't known everything.

Emma read on.

Edward Lancaster ordered something far worse than a simple child swap.

Victoria's breathing became uneven.

"No..."

Emma turned the page.

The next sentence sent a chill through every person in the room.

The fire was created to erase every child connected to Project Phoenix.

Silence.

Emma whispered,

"Project Phoenix."

The same name found in Edward's photograph.

She continued.

You were never supposed to survive.

Sarah Donovan closed her eyes.

Emma struggled to finish.

The nurse carrying you out of the hospital was seen by armed men.

I distracted them long enough for Sarah Carter to escape.

Arthur looked at Brooks.

"Armed men?"

Brooks nodded slowly.

"This wasn't hospital corruption."

"This was organized."

Emma reached the final page.

Her voice nearly failed.

Emma...

If you're reading this...

Never blame Sarah Carter.

She gave up everything to keep you alive.

She wasn't your foster mother.

She became your mother the moment she chose to risk her own life for yours.

Tears streamed down Emma's face.

Every memory returned at once.

Sarah teaching her to ride a bicycle.

Staying awake beside her hospital bed.

Working double shifts to pay school tuition.

Skipping meals so Emma could eat.

Sarah had never shared her blood.

But she had shared every sacrifice.

Emma smiled through her tears.

"Thank you..."

She whispered toward the silent screen.

"For choosing me."

The video was almost over.

Sarah Carter looked directly into the camera one last time.

"If I've done my job..."

"...Emma is alive."

She smiled warmly.

"And if she's alive..."

"...tell her..."

Her voice broke.

"...that I never wanted to replace her real mother."

"I only wanted her to live long enough to meet her."

The screen faded to black.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Several minutes later...

Agent Brooks finally broke the silence.

"We've been investigating a kidnapping."

Arthur slowly shook his head.

"No."

He looked at the words Project Phoenix written across Margaret's letter.

"We've been investigating the wrong crime."

Emma looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

Arthur's expression darkened.

"If Margaret is telling the truth..."

"...someone wasn't trying to steal children."

He looked around the room.

"They were trying to eliminate them."

At that exact moment, Brooks' phone rang.

He answered immediately.

His face changed within seconds.

"What happened?"

He listened.

Then slowly lowered the phone.

"We just searched Edward Lancaster's abandoned estate."

Arthur stood.

"What did you find?"

Brooks looked at Emma.

"They found another hidden nursery."

He paused.

"There were four cribs."

Emma felt her heart stop.

Brooks finished quietly.

May you like

"But according to the hospital records..."

"...only two babies were ever born that night."
