Chapter 3

The clinic appointment was scheduled for the following week. Daniel texted me the time. There was no apology in his message. There was only the address and a single sentence saying he would meet me there.
Margaret waited beside him outside the building.
She smiled when I arrived.
“I hope this settles everything.”
I stared at her.
“So do I.”
Inside, the nurse swabbed Daniel’s cheek. Then she swabbed mine, Noah’s, and Emma’s. The entire appointment lasted less than ten minutes.
Margaret observed every movement as though she expected the truth to confess itself.
“Results take around two weeks,” the nurse said.
Daniel followed me to the car. He reached toward the handle, but I opened it myself.
“Olivia,” he said.
I buckled Emma in.
“Not here.”
He backed away.
Two weeks later, we gathered at the genetic counseling office. Richard Carter came as well, because Margaret insisted everyone needed to hear the results together. He sat beside her and barely spoke.
Daniel sat close to me. His knee bounced beneath the table.
The counselor entered carrying a sealed folder. She smiled courteously, then opened the first page. Her expression changed before she raised her eyes.
“These results are unexpected.”
My heart pounded once.
Daniel reached toward my hand. I pulled mine into my lap.
Some wounds require more than one truth before they finally stop bleeding.
The counselor cleared her throat.
“Let’s begin with paternity.”
Margaret straightened in her chair.
“Noah Carter is Daniel Carter’s biological son.”
The breath escaped Daniel’s chest.
The counselor flipped the page.
“Emma Carter is also Daniel Carter’s biological daughter.”
I shut my eyes.
No trumpet sounded. Nobody celebrated. The truth arrived silently, and it found me already exhausted.
Daniel whispered, “Oh my God.”
Tears rolled down his cheeks.
“Olivia, I am so sorry.”
I looked at him and felt nothing uncomplicated. I loved him. I was furious with him. Both truths existed beside each other.
Margaret forced a smile and reached toward her purse.
“Well,” she said, “I am glad that is resolved. We can all move forward now.”
The counselor did not smile.
“Mrs. Carter, please stay seated.”
Margaret froze with one hand resting on her purse.
Daniel frowned.
May you like
“Why?”
The counselor removed another page from the folder.
