CHAPTER 19 – Emily's Last Secret

No one in the basement spoke.

Detective Laura Bennett's words echoed in everyone's minds.

"The fingerprints belong to... Emily Ashford."

Richard slowly shook his head.

"That's impossible."

"I buried my wife."

Laura answered carefully.

"I know what the records say."

"But the fingerprint match is 99.98%."

Samuel leaned against the wall, visibly shaken.

"I attended Emily's funeral."

"So did I," Richard whispered.

The team returned to the Ashford Grand Hotel, where a temporary command center had been established.

The USB drive labeled Chapter One was placed inside an isolated forensic computer.

The room darkened as the screen flickered to life.

A video file appeared.

Its title:

If Vivienne Is Watching

Richard instinctively reached for his daughter's hand.

She squeezed it tightly.

The video began.

Theodore Hawthorne appeared on the screen.

He looked younger than he had in the archive.

Healthy.

Confident.

The timestamp read:

Recorded 11 Years Ago.

Theodore looked directly into the camera.

"Vivienne... if you've reached this point, then you already know your life began with a lie."

He paused.

"But there is one lie I refused to tell."

Everyone listened in silence.

Theodore continued.

"Your mother never stopped searching."

Vivienne's eyes filled with tears.

"After the hospital fire, Emily believed something had happened to more than two children."

Richard frowned.

"You knew?"

Theodore nodded on the recording.

"She discovered Project Evergreen years before I did."

Laura immediately began taking notes.

Theodore leaned closer to the camera.

"Emily found evidence that Malcolm Pierce wasn't acting alone."

"Someone inside the federal government protected him."

The room became completely still.

Richard slowly exhaled.

"So that's why Theodore disappeared."

Laura nodded.

"He wasn't hiding from one man."

"He was hiding from an entire network."

The video continued.

"Richard..."

Theodore smiled sadly.

"If you're watching beside Vivienne..."

"...I'm sorry."

"I couldn't save Emily."

Richard closed his eyes.

The words struck him harder than anything else that night.

Then Theodore said something unexpected.

"But I don't believe she died."

Every person in the room looked at the screen.

Vivienne's heart pounded.

Richard stared without blinking.

Theodore explained.

"I saw the accident report."

"I saw the photographs."

"Nothing made sense."

"There was never enough evidence to identify the body."

Richard whispered,

"No..."

The memories came flooding back.

The police had recommended a closed-casket funeral because of the fire.

He had never seen Emily one last time.

He had accepted what officials told him.

Without questioning it.

Theodore looked directly into the camera.

"If Emily is alive..."

"...she stayed hidden for the same reason I did."

"To protect you."

The video ended abruptly.

The screen went black.

For nearly a minute, no one spoke.

Finally, Vivienne broke the silence.

"My mother..."

"...might still be alive."

Richard looked at her.

Hope and fear battled across his face.

"I don't know."

"But for the first time in sixteen years..."

"I have a reason to believe."

Just then, a forensic analyst rushed into the room.

"Detective!"

Laura stood immediately.

"What is it?"

"We recovered deleted files from the stolen journal's backup."

Richard stepped forward.

"Anything useful?"

The analyst nodded.

"We found one encrypted contact."

"Whose?"

"No name."

"Only an address."

He projected it onto the large screen.

Every person in the room stared.

It wasn't another safe house.

It wasn't a cemetery.

It wasn't a government office.

It was a quiet suburban home.

Registered to a woman named...

Grace Ellis.

Samuel's face turned pale.

"I know that name."

Richard looked at him sharply.

"Who is she?"

Samuel swallowed.

"She worked as a maternity nurse..."

"...the night of the hospital fire."

Laura immediately ordered a tactical team to prepare.

"If Grace Ellis is still alive..."

"...she may be the last living witness."

As officers rushed out of the command center, Vivienne picked up the silver locket Theodore had left her.

Something rattled inside.

She frowned.

"It wasn't making that noise before."

Richard carefully opened the locket again.

Hidden beneath the tiny photographs...

Folded into a space no one had noticed...

Was a microscopic strip of paper.

On it, in Emily Ashford's unmistakable handwriting, were seven words:

Don't trust anyone wearing the Ashford crest.

Richard's blood ran cold.

Every member of his corporate security team...

Every executive in his company...

Every trusted employee...

Wore the Ashford crest on their lapel.

May you like

Someone inside his own empire...

Had been betraying them all along.
