CHAPTER 4 – The Vault0

Richard Ashford stared at the faded photograph as though it had reached across twenty-five years and grabbed him by the throat.
Vivienne had never seen that expression on her father.
Not fear.
Not shock.
Recognition.
"Dad?" she asked softly.
He didn't answer.
Instead, he turned the photograph over again, reading the handwritten message a second time.
The wedding was only the beginning. Check the vault.
His chief legal counsel leaned closer.
"Sir... is that his handwriting?"
Richard nodded almost imperceptibly.
"I believe so."
"Theodore Hawthorne."
Dominic looked up immediately.
"My father?"
Richard slowly met his eyes.
"Yes."
The room became silent again.
Dominic's father had died nearly twelve years earlier in what everyone believed was a tragic boating accident.
Why would he leave a message mentioning today's wedding?
Detective Laura Bennett stepped forward.
"Mr. Ashford."
"Does this photograph have anything to do with the assault?"
Richard carefully slipped it back into the envelope.
"I don't know."
"But I intend to find out."
The detective nodded.
"If it relates to a possible crime, I'll need a copy."
"You'll have one."
Meanwhile, Chloe's perfect wedding had completely collapsed.
Guests were quietly leaving the ballroom.
The orchestra had packed away their instruments.
The elaborate wedding cake sat untouched.
The dance floor was empty.
Instead of celebrating a marriage...
Everyone was whispering about the Ashfords.
About the surveillance footage.
About the billionaire daughter no one had recognized.
Near the entrance, reporters had begun gathering outside the hotel after hearing rumors of police activity.
Camera flashes lit up the windows.
Hotel security locked the front entrance.
Inside, Eleanor sat trembling in a chair while an officer took her statement.
She no longer looked powerful.
Only frightened.
Dominic slowly approached Vivienne.
"I... I'm sorry."
She looked at him quietly.
"You watched."
"I know."
"You heard every insult."
"I know."
"You watched your mother tear my dress."
"I..."
His voice broke.
"I froze."
Vivienne nodded sadly.
"You made a choice."
"It wasn't a choice."
"It was."
She rested a hand on her stomach.
"Our child was standing beside me."
"You didn't protect either of us."
Dominic lowered his head.
There was nothing left to say.
Richard interrupted gently.
"Vivienne."
She turned toward him.
"I'm taking you home."
She smiled faintly.
"I'd like that."
Just then, Rachel hurried back into the ballroom.
"Mr. Ashford!"
Richard stopped.
"The hotel's archive manager just called."
"What happened?"
Rachel held up a tablet.
"The executive vault."
Richard's expression hardened.
"What about it?"
"It was accessed..."
She looked at the screen.
"...exactly thirty-eight minutes before the ceremony."
His eyes narrowed.
"By whom?"
Rachel swallowed.
"The authorization doesn't list a name."
"It only says..."
She rotated the tablet toward him.
MASTER OWNER ACCESS
Richard frowned.
"That's impossible."
"There are only two master access cards."
He reached into his jacket.
"My card is here."
Everyone looked toward Vivienne.
She slowly reached into her purse.
Then pulled out the black electronic access card that Chloe had mocked earlier.
Richard stared at it.
"The second card..."
"...has been with you."
Vivienne nodded.
"You gave it to me years ago."
"So I could enter any Ashford property without checking in."
Richard's voice became quiet.
"If both cards are here..."
"...then who opened the vault?"
The hotel manager suddenly looked terrified.
"Sir..."
"There is... one more possibility."
Richard turned.
"What?"
The manager hesitated.
"There used to be..."
"...a third master card."
Richard's face changed instantly.
"No."
"It was destroyed."
"So we believed."
The manager looked down.
"The records say otherwise."
The ballroom doors opened again.
A gray-haired man in a maintenance uniform entered nervously.
"I'm sorry to interrupt."
"I was asked to bring this."
He carried a sealed steel lockbox.
"It was waiting inside the executive vault."
The tag attached to it read:
TO BE DELIVERED ONLY IF RICHARD ASHFORD'S DAUGHTER CALLS FOR HELP.
Vivienne stared at the label in disbelief.
"My name..."
"It mentions me."
The maintenance worker nodded.
"It does."
Richard slowly accepted the heavy lockbox.
The date stamped on the security seal made everyone stop breathing.
Sealed: Twelve Years Ago.
Exactly one week before Theodore Hawthorne died.
Richard whispered to himself,
"What did you leave behind, Theodore...?"
Before anyone could answer—
A loud crash echoed from outside the ballroom.
One of the hotel windows shattered.
Guests screamed.
Security officers rushed toward the sound.
A black-clad figure had smashed through the emergency exit...
May you like
Not to get in—
But to steal the lockbox from Richard's hands.
