On my wedding night, I watched my father-in-law strike my mother-in-law across the face. I rushed forward, but my husband slapped me hard and hissed, “Stay out of my family’s business.” I stared at him, grabbed his hand, and broke three of his fingers before taking his mother to the hospital the next morning. “They paid for that mistake,” I said quietly… but what I did afterward was far worse.
