Chapter 11 - THE NIGHT NOAH DISAPPEARED

Z

Catherine did not answer her phone.

Neither did Noah.

Liam called both repeatedly during the drive back to Raleigh.

Emily had never seen him like this.

The calm remained.

But it was no longer control.

It was restraint stretched over panic.

“Maybe she just took him home,” Emily said.

“She was told not to remove him from school without notifying me.”

“He’s sixteen.”

“He also knows he’s supposed to text.”

Liam called again.

Voicemail.

His jaw tightened.

Emily remembered the old footage.

Six-year-old Noah.

Catherine.

The false passport.

This was not simply a divorced father overreacting.

It was a scar reopening.

“Can you track his phone?”

“Already tried.”

“Off?”

“Yes.”

“Catherine’s?”

“Also off.”

Emily stared out the window.

“Would she take him?”

Liam didn’t answer.

“Liam.”

“I don’t know.”

That frightened her most.

They reached the house at 3:40.

Margaret was waiting.

“She called me.”

Liam stopped.

“When?”

“Twenty minutes ago.”

“And?”

“She said Noah is safe.”

“Where?”

“She wouldn’t say.”

Liam’s expression became lethal.

Margaret stepped closer.

“She said she wants you to withdraw from Halston and resign as CEO.”

Emily stared.

“You’re joking.”

Margaret looked at her.

“I wish I were.”

Liam pulled out his phone.

“What are you doing?”

“Calling police.”

Margaret caught his arm.

“Wait.”

He looked at her hand.

She released him immediately.

“She said if police become involved she’ll release something.”

“What?”

Margaret looked at Emily.

Liam’s face hardened.

“What?”

“A recording.”

“Of?”

Margaret swallowed.

“Dad.”

Liam froze.

Their father had been dead eleven years.

Emily looked between them.

“What recording?”

Margaret sat down.

“When Dad was dying, he changed his will.”

Liam’s eyes narrowed.

“I know.”

“No.”

Margaret looked devastated.

“You know the will that was filed.”

Silence.

“What are you saying?”

“There was another version.”

Liam’s voice became very soft.

“Margaret.”

“He left Grant almost nothing.”

Emily understood immediately.

“But Grant inherited twenty percent.”

Margaret nodded.

“I signed an affidavit saying the earlier version was invalid.”

Liam stared at his sister.

“Why?”

“Mother begged me.”

“Why?”

“Because Grant had already threatened to expose Catherine’s affair.”

Liam’s face changed.

“You knew?”

Margaret began crying.

“I knew before you did.”

The betrayal kept multiplying.

Emily felt almost dizzy.

“You knew Catherine and Grant were together?”

“Yes.”

“And you said nothing?”

“I thought it would end.”

Liam turned away.

Margaret continued.

“Dad found out. He wanted Grant removed from the family trust. Then he had a second stroke.”

“And you changed the will.”

“I didn’t change it.”

“You concealed it.”

“Yes.”

“Which allowed Grant to inherit voting shares.”

“Yes.”

Emily saw the entire architecture.

Grant’s power had begun with a family lie.

Catherine had leverage because she knew.

Margaret had remained silent because she was implicated.

Liam had spent a decade fighting a man who might never have had legal control in the first place.

“What does Catherine have?” Emily asked.

Margaret wiped her eyes.

“A recording of Dad telling me where the original signed will was kept.”

“Where?”

Margaret looked at Liam.

“The old Cape Haven house.”

The resort.

Emily’s wedding.

Her stomach tightened.

“Does it still exist?”

Liam nodded slowly.

“It’s been vacant for years.”

Margaret said, “If Catherine gets the original first, she can destroy it.”

Liam was already moving.

Emily caught his hand.

“Noah.”

He stopped.

“He is still the priority.”

Liam looked at her.

“Yes.”

“Then Catherine wants you distracted.”

His eyes sharpened.

“She wants you running to Cape Haven while she moves Noah.”

Margaret stared.

Emily continued.

“Or she wants you to call police and force her to release the recording, which sends everyone to the house.”

Liam’s phone buzzed.

A message.

From Noah.

Dad, I’m okay.

Another.

Mom says I need to hear the truth before you control everything again.

Then:

Don’t call police.

Liam immediately typed.

Where are you?

No response.

Emily took out her phone.

“What are you doing?” Liam asked.

“Messaging Noah.”

“He isn’t answering me.”

“Exactly.”

She typed:

Your father is terrifying everyone and pretending he isn’t. Please tell me you ate lunch.

Three dots appeared.

Liam stared.

A reply.

LOL.

Then:

Yes.

Emily typed:

Good. I’m not asking where you are. Are you there by choice?

Long pause.

Mostly.

Emily’s heart tightened.

Mostly was not yes.

She replied:

Do you want me to come alone?

The answer came instantly.

Yes.

Liam shook his head.

“No.”

Emily looked at him.

“You don’t even know where.”

“No.”

“He trusts me.”

“And Catherine knows that.”

“So?”

“So this could be bait.”

“Then we handle it carefully.”

“We?”

“Yes, Liam. We.”

Noah sent an address.

A marina twenty miles outside Raleigh.

Liam recognized it.

His face hardened.

“Grant owns property there.”

Emily felt cold.

Of course he did.

Liam called security.

“No police yet. Two vehicles. Stay back.”

Then he looked at Emily.

“You’re not going inside alone.”

“I said I would.”

“You said you’d come alone. That doesn’t mean I let you walk into an unknown building.”

“Then stay out of sight.”

His jaw tightened.

“That is the most you’re getting.”

They drove to the marina at sunset.

Emily walked toward the warehouse by herself.

Her heart pounded.

The door opened.

Noah stood there.

Relief hit her so hard she almost cried.

Then she saw Catherine behind him.

And Grant Whitmore beside her.

Grant smiled.

“Welcome, Emily.”

She stopped.

Noah looked uncomfortable.

“Mom said we were just talking.”

Emily kept her eyes on him.

“Do you want to leave?”

Catherine answered.

“He’s fine.”

Emily looked at her.

“I asked Noah.”

Noah hesitated.

Then nodded.

“Yes.”

Grant’s smile disappeared.

Emily held out her hand.

“Then come with me.”

Noah started forward.

Grant stepped between them.

“Not yet.”

Emily’s pulse kicked.

Outside, somewhere beyond the marina, Liam was waiting.

Grant looked at her.

“You want to know why Liam married you?”

Emily stared.

“I already do.”

“No.”

Grant smiled again.

“You know the version he can survive.”

May you like

Then he placed a folder on the table.

“Ask him why he investigated you for six months before your father ever told you Carter was in trouble.”
