Chapter 15 - THE NIGHT CATHERINE FINALLY TOLD THE TRUTH

Z
Grant was not arrested that day.
But he was placed on administrative leave.
His voting authority was suspended.
Federal investigators seized records from Harbor Crest.
Whitmore Development’s board postponed the CEO vote indefinitely.
The crisis should have been over.
It wasn’t.
Catherine disappeared.
Noah called her repeatedly.
No answer.
By the third day he stopped pretending he wasn’t worried.
Emily found him sitting beside the pool after midnight.
“You should be asleep.”
“So should you.”
“Fair.”
She sat beside him.
He looked toward the water.
“Do you hate my mom?”
Emily considered carefully.
“No.”
“You should.”
“That’s not how it works.”
“She lied to you.”
“Yes.”
“She helped Grant.”
“Apparently.”
“She tried to make you scared of Dad.”
Emily nodded.
Noah looked at her.
“Then why don’t you hate her?”
“Because I think she made terrible choices. I also think she probably has reasons she tells herself make those choices understandable.”
“That sounds like an adult answer.”
“Sorry.”
He smiled faintly.
Then his phone rang.
Mom.
Noah stood so fast the chair moved.
He answered.
“Mom?”
Emily watched his face.
“Where are you?”
Pause.
“No.”
His face went pale.
“Mom, don’t.”
Emily stood.
Noah looked at her.
“She’s at the Cape Haven house.”
The old Whitmore property.
The place where the original will had been found.
Emily ran inside.
Liam was already coming downstairs.
He had heard.
“What happened?”
Noah’s voice shook.
“She says she wants to explain everything.”
Liam reached for his keys.
Emily caught his arm.
“Not alone.”
He looked at her.
“I wasn’t going to ask you.”
“I wasn’t asking permission.”
Noah actually laughed despite himself.
An hour later they reached the abandoned house overlooking the Atlantic.
Catherine sat on the back terrace.
Alone.
Her shoes were beside her chair.
A bottle of wine sat unopened on the table.
She looked exhausted.
Not elegant.
Not controlled.
Human.
Noah went to her.
“Mom.”
She hugged him fiercely.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“Everything.”
Liam remained several feet away.
Catherine looked at Emily.
“You came.”
“Yes.”
“I suppose I deserve an audience.”
“No,” Emily said. “Noah deserves answers.”
Catherine flinched.
They sat.
For several moments only waves filled the silence.
Then Catherine began.
“I met Grant when Liam was never home.”
Liam’s jaw tightened.
Catherine raised a hand.
“I’m not excusing it.”
That surprised everyone.
“I was lonely. Angry. Entitled. Grant listened.”
She laughed bitterly.
“He also wanted what Liam had.”
“Catherine,” Liam said.
“I know.”
She looked at him.
“I knew eventually.”
Emily listened.
“At first Grant asked questions about the company. Small things. Which investors Liam trusted. What deals worried him. I told him because I wanted attention.”
Noah stared at the ground.
“Then money?”
Catherine nodded.
“My brother owed dangerous people. I took from charitable accounts thinking I would replace it.”
“Twelve million?” Emily asked.
“Not initially.”
Catherine wiped her eyes.
“Grant showed me how to move money. Then he started controlling the transfers.”
“So you became trapped.”
“Yes.”
Liam spoke quietly.
“You could have told me.”
“I was afraid.”
“Of me?”
“Of losing everything.”
Catherine looked at him.
“And because by then I hated you.”
The honesty landed hard.
“You were perfect at being responsible, Liam. Perfect at fixing problems. Perfect at knowing the right answer.”
Her voice broke.
“And I hated how small I felt beside you.”
Emily looked at Liam.
He said nothing.
Catherine continued.
“That night I tried to leave with Noah, Grant told me he would meet us in Switzerland.”
Noah looked up.
“Did you really plan to take me away from Dad?”
“Yes.”
His face crumpled.
“I’m sorry.”
“Why?”
“Because I was selfish.”
Noah stood.
He walked toward the railing.
Liam started after him.
Emily touched his arm.
“Give him a minute.”
Liam stopped.
Catherine looked at Emily.
“You’ve taught him something I couldn’t.”
“What?”
“To stop.”
Emily glanced at Liam.
He heard.
Catherine gave a sad smile.
“He always thought love meant preventing bad things from happening.”
Liam’s voice was rough.
“I still do.”
“I know.”
Catherine turned back to Emily.
“Grant contacted me three months ago. Said Liam was interested in you. He wanted information.”
“You helped him?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Money. Revenge. Habit.”
Emily appreciated the lack of excuses.
“I leaked the marriage contract.”
Liam closed his eyes.
Noah turned.
“Mom.”
“I know.”
“You were trying to ruin Dad.”
“Yes.”
“And Emily.”
Catherine looked at him.
“Yes.”
Noah walked away.
Catherine began crying.
Liam moved toward his son.
This time Emily did not stop him.
She sat across from Catherine.
“Why tell us now?”
“Because Grant wants me to say Liam threatened me during our marriage.”
“Did he?”
Catherine looked toward Liam.
“He frightened me sometimes.”
Emily waited.
“But no,” Catherine said. “Not the way Grant wants me to claim.”
“Will you tell investigators that?”
“Yes.”
Catherine opened her purse.
She removed a small recorder.
“Grant called yesterday.”
She placed it on the table.
“I recorded him.”
Liam stared.
“What did he say?”
“That if I don’t testify against you, he’ll release evidence implicating me in the original theft.”
Catherine laughed bitterly.
“As if I’m not already implicated.”
Emily picked up the recorder.
“This could finish him.”
“Yes.”
“Why give it to us?”
Catherine looked at Noah.
“Because for ten years I have made every decision based on what I was afraid to lose.”
Her eyes filled.
“I’m going to make one based on what my son deserves.”
Liam said nothing.
Catherine looked at him.
“I’m sorry.”
He stood across from the woman who had betrayed him with his brother, tried to take his son, stolen corporate money, and spent years helping destabilize his company.
Emily expected coldness.
Instead Liam said:
“I believe you.”
Catherine began crying harder.
“I don’t know if I forgive you.”
She nodded.
“I know.”
“But I believe you’re sorry.”
Noah returned slowly.
His mother opened her arms.
He hesitated.
Then hugged her.
Emily looked toward the ocean.
Liam came to stand beside her.
“You okay?” she asked.
“No.”
“Good.”
He looked at her.
“That would have been a disturbing time to say yes.”
A quiet laugh escaped him.
Then his hand moved near hers.
He stopped.
Waiting.
Emily looked down.
After everything, he still asked without words.
May you like
She placed her hand in his.
And this time, she did not feel trapped.
