Chapter 6 - THE SHADOW OF THE PAST
By eight o’clock that evening, the quiet precinct had transformed into a busy command center. Detective Harrison Hayes from the Special Victims Unit had arrived to take charge of the investigation, setting up his laptop at Terrence’s desk.
“Callahan, you need to see what we just pulled from the father’s personal phone and laptop,” Detective Hayes said, gesturing for Terrence to step over to the dual monitors.
“Did you find something other than the pharmacy records?” Terrence asked, pulling up a chair beside the detective.
“This wasn’t an accidental mix-up or a sudden moment of panic,” Detective Hayes explained, his voice flat and serious. “This was a meticulously calculated operation that he has been planning for weeks.”
The digital forensics report revealed that Dr. Douglas Sinclair was currently embroiled in a bitter custody battle with his ex-wife, a high school teacher named Evelyn Sinclair. Evelyn had filed for divorce two years earlier after enduring years of emotional manipulation and psychological control behind closed doors.
“Evelyn has been fighting through family court to secure full custody of Charlotte and Delilah,” Detective Hayes pointed out, clicking on a court document. “She was actually winning her case because the court investigator saw through the doctor’s charming routine.”
“So he was about to lose custody of the twins?” Terrence asked.
“The final custody evaluation meeting was scheduled for this coming Thursday,” Detective Hayes confirmed. “The court evaluator was going to interview both girls privately, without either parent present in the room.”
The detective scrolled down to display the doctor’s internet search history from his personal computer, recorded over the previous ten days. Terrence read the search queries on the bright screen, feeling a cold knot form in his stomach.
The search logs contained explicit queries regarding pediatric drug tolerances, non-lethal dosage thresholds for adult sedatives, and legal precedents regarding child neglect charges against custodial mothers. Douglas had been researching how to induce a severe medical crisis in his daughter while making it appear as though the mother had left dangerous chemicals within the children’s reach.
“He was trying to frame his ex-wife,” Terrence realized aloud, staring at the screen in disbelief.
“Exactly,” Detective Hayes agreed, nodding solemnly. “His plan was to administer the sedative to Delilah right before returning the girls to Evelyn’s house. When the child collapsed, he was going to accuse Evelyn of gross negligence, call child protective services, and secure emergency full custody.”
“He was willing to poison his own seven-year-old child just to win a legal battle against his ex-wife,” Terrence said softly, shaking his head.
“Men like Douglas Sinclair view their family members as possessions rather than human beings,” Detective Hayes explained. “He couldn’t tolerate the idea of losing in court, so he manufactured a medical catastrophe to control the outcome. The only thing he didn’t account for was Charlotte.”

“She watched him,” Terrence said, remembering how the little girl had stood between him and her twin. “She saw what he was doing and understood the danger.”
“She outsmarted a pediatric doctor with two university degrees,” Detective Hayes added with a hint of admiration. “If she hadn’t hidden that syringe in her shoe and walked her sister out of that house, Evelyn Sinclair would likely be in handcuffs right now, and Delilah might not have survived the night.”
