Chapter 7 - MOTHER AND DAUGHTERS

At ten o’clock that night, the front doors of the station opened, and Evelyn Sinclair rushed into the lobby alongside a victim advocate from the county office. Her face was pale, her eyes bloodshot from hours of crying after receiving the urgent call from the hospital.

Terrence immediately stood up and walked her back to the quiet private family room where Charlotte and Delilah were waiting under medical supervision. The moment Evelyn saw her daughters, her knees gave out, and she sank directly onto the carpet floor.

“Oh my sweet girls! My precious babies!” Evelyn cried out, pulling both seven-year-olds tightly into her arms.

Delilah wrapped her weak arms around her mother’s neck, while Charlotte buried her face deeply into Evelyn’s coat. Evelyn held them tightly, rocking back and forth on the floor while repeating the same words over and over again. “I’ve got you now, you’re safe, mommy’s got you, nobody is ever going to hurt you again.”

Terrence stood quietly in the doorway, watching the tearful reunion from a respectful distance. He knew the immense guilt that mothers in these situations carried, believing they should have seen the danger sooner or protected their children from the ordeal.

After several minutes, Charlotte lifted her head from her mother’s shoulder and pointed toward the doorway. “Mommy, that’s Officer Callahan,” Charlotte said softly. “He locked the big glass doors so Daddy couldn’t come inside and take us away.”

Evelyn wiped her tears and slowly stood up, walking across the room to take Terrence’s hand in both of hers. “Thank you so much,” Evelyn choked out, her voice trembling with raw emotion. “If you hadn’t locked those doors, if you hadn’t believed my daughter when she walked in here…”

“You don’t need to thank me, Mrs. Sinclair,” Terrence replied gently, looking over at the two little girls sitting together on the couch. “Your daughter Charlotte is the real hero here. In my thirty years on the police force, I have never seen a child act with such incredible courage and intelligence. All I did was open the door and listen to her.”
