Chapter 22

Her gaze remained on Lily.

“That requires an explanation.”

“Then explain.”

Victor turned sharply. “Not here.”

“No,” I said. “Here.”

The security men exchanged glances.

I did not care.

“For the last two hours,” I said, “people have told me my mother was part of a secret, that my name may not be mine, that someone has been watching my child, and now this woman points at Lily and calls her Annie. I am not going into another hidden room until someone tells me the truth.”

Sofia’s expression softened.

“Elena raised you well.”

The mention of my mother made anger rise in me.

“You don’t get to speak about her like you knew her better than I did.”

“No,” Sofia said quietly. “I don’t.”

Victor looked toward Marco.

“Clear the foyer.”

Within moments, only Victor, Sofia, Rosa, Marco, Lily, and I remained.

Rosa brought a chair for Sofia, but she did not sit.

Her attention returned to Lily.

“May I see the locket?”

“No.”

“I won’t touch it.”

“You already have one.”

Sofia opened her palm.

Her locket rested there, old and darkened with age. Unlike Lily’s, its front bore a shallow dent.

“There were four,” she said. “Not two.”

Victor’s eyes narrowed. “Four?”

“One for each child.”

“What children?”

Sofia finally sat.

Her hands trembled as she placed the locket on her knee.

“Elena and Daniel discovered what Father was doing with the family trust,” she said. “But the money was only part of it.”

Victor’s jaw tightened at the word Father.
