Chapter 11 - THE SECRET RYAN KEPT BEFORE WE MARRIED

I kept reading.

He did not ask me for money.

He asked for advice.

His company had taken on commitments too quickly, and he was ashamed to tell Claire because their wedding was approaching.

Ryan cared very much about appearing dependable.

I understood the weakness because I have carried it myself.

I offered him a private loan of seventy-five thousand dollars on one condition:

That he tell Claire before the wedding.

He promised he would.

My vision blurred.

I looked at Ryan.

“You never told me.”

“No.”

The letter continued.

If Ryan failed to tell her, then he made a serious mistake.

If you helped him hide that mistake, Patricia, then so did you.

Patricia closed her eyes.

But I know both of you love him.

And loving someone can make us protect the very habits they most need to outgrow.

Do not help Ryan turn Claire’s security into the price of preserving his pride.

Her home is hers.

I am protecting additional assets because I know my daughter.

She will give away everything she owns if she believes doing so will save someone she loves.

Sometimes generosity is courage.

Sometimes saying no is courage too.

I stopped reading.

My chest hurt.

Not from fear.

From missing Dad.

His voice seemed to be sitting in the room with me.

There was one final paragraph.

If the day comes when this letter matters, then all of you have probably reached a point where honesty is expensive.

Pay the price.

It will still be cheaper than another lie.

Arthur.

Nobody spoke.

Then Ryan covered his face.

“I never paid him back.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“Actually, you did.”

Ryan’s head lifted.

“What?”

“The trust shows payments totaling seventy-six thousand four hundred dollars over approximately two years.”

“I made payments to an investment account.”

“That was your repayment agreement.”

Ryan stared at her.

“Marcus told me it was a reserve fund.”

The room shifted again.

Evelyn opened another folder.

“We’ve reviewed the company records Ryan provided.”

“Was Marcus stealing?” I asked.

“Possibly.”

She turned several documents around.

“At minimum, he was moving money and disguising the purpose of transactions.”

Ryan looked sick.

But I had only one question.

“Did any of this involve my house?”

Evelyn shook her head.

“No.”

For the first time in days, I could breathe.

Then Patricia spoke.

May you like

“There is something I need to admit.”

And everyone turned toward her.
