Chapter 7 - THE MAN IN THE GRAY SUIT

Megan paused the recording.

“You can stop.”

“No.”

“You don’t have to watch your marriage collapse frame by frame.”

“I need to understand who I was living with.”

Evelyn looked at me.

“Sometimes the answer is more than one person.”

I waited.

“People can be loving during one season, frightened during another, dishonest during another. The important question isn’t whether Ryan ever cared about you.”

“What is it?”

“Whether the relationship is safe, truthful, and repairable now.”

The next significant recording came twelve days before the assault.

Patricia entered the kitchen with a man I didn’t recognize.

Mid-fifties.

Gray suit.

Expensive watch.

He placed a folder on the counter.

“We need signatures before the end of the month.”

Patricia frowned.

“My son is working on her.”

The man’s face changed.

“We do not advise pressure.”

“Oh, please.”

“I mean it, Mrs. Caldwell. Northbridge is prepared to negotiate Ryan’s commercial debt. We are not interested in becoming part of a family dispute.”

Patricia tapped the folder.

“You want the redevelopment option.”

“We want a legal transaction.”

“You’ll have one.”

“And Claire Bennett must have independent legal representation.”

Patricia smiled.

“My daughter-in-law doesn’t understand business.”

“Then she needs representation even more.”

The man left.

Megan paused the video.

“Well,” she said slowly.

“That isn’t what I expected.”

Neither was it what I expected.

Northbridge might want my land.

But from the footage, they were not secretly plotting to steal it.

The pressure was coming from someone much closer.

Patricia.

“Can we identify him?” I asked.

Evelyn nodded.

“I’ll contact Northbridge.”

By afternoon, we had a name.

Thomas Bell.

Northbridge’s acquisitions director.

He agreed to meet immediately.

Two days later, he sat across from us in Megan’s dining room.

“I want to be very clear,” he began. “Northbridge never had an agreement with Mrs. Bennett.”

“Then why were documents prepared?” Evelyn asked.

“Because Mrs. Caldwell told us Claire was willing to discuss a sale.”

I stared at him.

“She told you that?”

“Yes.”

“I never agreed to sell anything.”

Thomas nodded.

“I understand that now.”

Then Evelyn asked the question that changed the entire picture.

“What, exactly, was Patricia Caldwell supposed to receive if Claire signed?”

May you like

Thomas hesitated.

And that hesitation told me there was money involved.
