Chapter 6 - The Night Lucian Discovered Why She Disappeared

The bedroom door opened behind Mara, and a man whispered, "Don't let Daniel touch that computer."

Mara spun around.

A stranger stood in the doorway, holding a bloodstained envelope.

Lucian immediately stepped between them.

Daniel reached inside his jacket, but the stranger raised his empty hand.

"I'm not here to hurt her," he said. "I'm here because Gabriel Mercer has already made his next move."

Then he looked directly at Lucian.

"And if you want to know why Mara disappeared three years ago, you need to hear what your father ordered me to do."

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The stranger appeared to be in his late forties, with dark hair streaked with gray and a thin scar running from his temple to his jaw. His charcoal coat was soaked from the rain, and his breathing was uneven, as if he had run a considerable distance.

Mara noticed the envelope in his hand.

The blood had dried along one corner.

"Who are you?" Lucian demanded.

The stranger looked at Daniel before answering.

"Peter Callahan. Former investigator for the Chicago financial crimes division."

Daniel's expression changed.

"You were declared missing."

Peter gave a humorless smile.

"Apparently, everyone in this city has been declared dead at least once."

Lucian didn't lower his guard.

"How did you get inside my residence?"

"Your security system still uses the same emergency access protocol it used twelve years ago."

Lucian's eyes narrowed.

"Only three people knew that protocol."

Peter nodded.

"Your father, Daniel, and me."

Daniel took a step forward.

"I haven't used that system in years."

"Maybe not," Peter replied. "But somebody did tonight."

He placed the envelope on the nearest table.

"Gabriel's people have been watching this property since sunset. One of them entered through the east service gate twenty minutes ago."

Mara felt her stomach tighten.

"The man outside the gate?"

"That was a distraction."

Lucian looked toward the hallway.

"Where is the other man?"

Peter's expression darkened.

"Inside the house."

A heavy silence followed.

Daniel immediately reached for his phone.

"I'll alert the security team."

"No," Peter said sharply. "That's exactly what Gabriel wants."

Daniel stopped.

Peter pointed toward the laptop.

"Someone has been accessing your systems remotely. If you send an alert through the usual network, you'll tell them exactly where everyone is standing."

Lucian turned toward Daniel.

"Disconnect the house network."

Daniel nodded and moved toward the equipment cabinet.

Mara watched Peter carefully.

"Why did you come here?"

He looked at her.

"Because I made a promise to your father."

Her breath caught.

"You knew Thomas?"

Peter nodded.

"I was investigating Charles Mercer when Thomas approached me. He had discovered that Mercer's companies were laundering money through a network of charities and private investment firms."

"And the ledgers?" Lucian asked.

"Thomas had copies. Enough to destroy Mercer's entire operation."

Peter paused.

"But he also had something more dangerous."

Mara's fingers curled against her palm.

"What?"

"A list of the people who helped Mercer build his empire."

Peter looked at Lucian.

"One of those names belonged to someone your father trusted."

Lucian's expression hardened.

"Who?"

Peter opened the envelope.

Inside was a photograph of a man standing outside a hospital.

The picture was old and slightly blurred.

But the face was unmistakable.

Vittorio Moretti.

Beside him stood Thomas Bennett.

And between them was a woman holding two newborn babies.

Mara leaned closer.

The woman wore a red coat.

Helena.

Peter pointed to the back of the photograph.

"Your father took this picture on the night Mara and Gabriel were born."

Lucian studied it.

"Why was Vittorio at the hospital?"

Peter hesitated.

"Because he was trying to stop Charles Mercer from taking one of the babies."

Mara felt cold.

"Which baby?"

Peter looked at her.

"Gabriel."

Lucian's expression barely changed, but Mara could see his anger building.

"You're telling me my father knew Charles Mercer had taken his own son?"

"Yes."

"And he did nothing?"

Peter shook his head.

"He tried to stop him. But by the time Vittorio arrived, Gabriel had already been removed from the nursery."

Mara stared at the photograph.

Two newborns.

Two identical bracelets.

One child missing.

A family divided before either child could speak.

"What happened to the other baby?" she asked.

Peter looked toward Lucian.

"That depends on what you believe."

Mara frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"Thomas believed both babies were supposed to be taken. Charles wanted them separated because their existence threatened a financial arrangement he had made years earlier."

Lucian folded his arms.

"What arrangement?"

Peter lowered his voice.

"Charles had been using false identities to move money through companies registered to people who didn't exist. One of those identities belonged to a child who had supposedly died at birth."

Mara felt her pulse quicken.

"Gabriel?"

"Possibly. But the records were altered so many times that I couldn't establish which identity belonged to which child."

Peter tapped the photograph.

"Thomas realized the birth records could expose the fraud. He made copies and hid them. Charles retaliated by arranging Thomas's death."

Mara shook her head.

"My father died of a heart attack."

Peter's face softened.

"That's what the official report said."

"No."

"I'm sorry."

Mara took a step backward.

She had spent years remembering her father's final days.

The crossword puzzle he left unfinished.

The coffee mug on the kitchen counter.

The birthday card he had written for her but never delivered.

She had mourned him as a man who had died too soon.

Now she was learning that someone might have killed him to conceal a financial conspiracy.

"Who killed him?" she whispered.

Peter looked at the floor.

"I never proved it."

Lucian's voice turned cold.

"But you have a suspicion."

Peter nodded.

"Yes."

He looked toward Daniel.

"And I think the person responsible has been helping Gabriel ever since."

Daniel's face tightened.

"You're accusing me?"

"I'm telling you what the evidence suggests."

Daniel took a step forward.

"You'd better be careful."

Lucian raised his hand.

"Both of you, stop."

He turned to Peter.

"Show me the evidence."

Peter opened the envelope again.

This time, he removed a folded sheet of paper.

It contained a list of names, dates, and payments.

Near the bottom was an entry dated six years earlier.

Recipient: Adrian Vale.

Purpose: Locate Mara Bennett.

Authorized by: D. Russo.

Mara looked at Daniel.

He had gone completely still.

"Is that your signature?" Lucian asked.

Daniel stared at the document.

"No."

Peter placed another sheet beside it.

"Then explain why your account was used to authorize the transfer."

Daniel shook his head.

"I didn't approve that payment."

Lucian's expression darkened.

"Then somebody used your identity."

Daniel looked at the screen.

His voice dropped.

"Somebody who knew my passwords."

Nobody spoke.

Because only a handful of people had ever possessed that information.

And one of them was standing in the room.

Mara moved toward the window.

She needed distance from the accusations.

Every new answer created another question.

She looked down at the garden.

Three black cars stood behind the iron gates.

Security lights swept across the stone walls.

Beyond them, Chicago glittered in the darkness.

She had once believed the world was divided into good people and bad people.

Now she understood that some of the most dangerous lies were told by people who claimed to be protecting her.

Lucian approached quietly.

"Are you all right?"

She almost laughed.

"No."

He nodded.

"Fair enough."

She looked at him.

"Did you know my father?"

"Only through what you told me."

"Did you ever suspect any of this?"

"No."

She searched his face.

"Not even when I left?"

Lucian looked away.

"When you disappeared, I thought I'd failed you."

Mara swallowed.

"I wanted to tell you."

"I know."

"No, Lucian. I mean I almost called you dozens of times."

He looked back at her.

"Why didn't you?"

"Because every time I reached for the phone, I remembered the photographs of Sophie."

Her voice cracked.

"They sent me pictures of her sleeping. Walking to school. Sitting in a restaurant. They knew everything."

Lucian's jaw tightened.

"They threatened her life."

Mara nodded.

"They said if I told you, they would kill her. They said you would retaliate, and then everyone I loved would die."

She pressed her hands together.

"I believed them."

Lucian remained silent.

"I wrote you a letter every week for two months," she continued. "I never sent them. I kept them in a box beneath my bed."

"Where are they now?"

"Adrian found them."

Lucian went still.

Mara nodded slowly.

"He burned them in the fireplace. He told me that if I ever tried to contact you again, he would make sure Sophie disappeared permanently."

Lucian closed his eyes.

For a moment, the only sound was the distant hum of the house.

Then he asked, "Did Adrian ever tell you who gave him those photographs?"

"No."

"Did he ever mention Gabriel?"

Mara thought carefully.

"Not by name. But once, when he was angry, he called someone his employer. He said that man had promised him a future in exchange for one simple favor."

"What favor?"

Mara looked directly at him.

"Marrying me."

Lucian's expression became dangerously still.

"Did he say why?"

"He said I was the key to something."

She paused.

"Then he told me that my father had hidden something inside the one object I would never willingly surrender."

Lucian glanced toward the laptop.

"The bracelet."

Mara nodded.

"I thought he meant the bracelet was sentimental. I didn't know it contained anything."

Peter approached them.

"That fits the timeline."

Lucian turned.

"How?"

"Adrian's first payments were small. He was being paid to watch you. After you started dating Lucian, the payments increased."

Peter pointed toward the financial records.

"Someone wanted you to remain close to the Moretti family."

Mara frowned.

"But I left Lucian."

"Which is why they changed the plan," Peter said. "Adrian was ordered to marry you. If he couldn't get the information through your relationship with Lucian, he would get it through your belongings."

Mara felt sick.

"He made me believe he loved me."

Peter didn't soften the truth.

"He may have enjoyed having control over you. But the marriage itself was an assignment."

Mara turned away.

She thought about the first anniversary when Adrian had surprised her with flowers.

The second anniversary when he had taken her to a restaurant and held her hand across the table.

The third anniversary when he had locked her in the bedroom for refusing to hand over her phone.

She had spent years trying to understand when the man she married had changed.

Now she wondered whether that man had ever existed.

Daniel stood beside the equipment cabinet, examining a list of recent access attempts.

"Lucian."

Everyone turned.

"I found something."

He rotated the laptop.

A security log displayed a series of entries.

One access attempt had occurred at 8:17 p.m.

Another at 8:23.

A third at 8:41.

Mara recognized the first time.

It was when she had been standing in the conservatory at Blackwood Estate.

The second was when Lucian arrived.

The third was after the hospital video appeared.

Daniel pointed to the final entry.

"Someone accessed the archive from inside this residence."

Lucian looked at him.

"When?"

"Three minutes ago."

Peter stepped toward the screen.

"That's impossible. I disconnected the external network."

Daniel's expression changed.

"Then the access came from an internal device."

Mara stared.

"Someone here is connected to the system?"

Daniel nodded.

"Or someone left a device behind."

Lucian turned toward the security team on the other side of the room.

"Search every room. Quietly. Nobody leaves until we've identified the device."

Two guards moved immediately.

Mara felt her pulse quicken.

The house had seemed safe when they arrived.

Now every shadow looked suspicious.

She glanced toward the staircase.

Her bedroom was upstairs.

The room where she had hoped to sleep without dreaming of Adrian.

The room where the security camera had detected movement beneath the door.

She looked at Lucian.

"Someone was in my room."

He nodded.

"I know."

"What were they looking for?"

Peter answered before Lucian could.

"The bracelet."

Mara's hand instinctively moved to her bare wrist.

"But the chip is downstairs."

"That doesn't mean the bracelet was the only thing they wanted."

Lucian's expression hardened.

"Get me the complete inventory from the bedroom."

One of the guards hurried upstairs.

The others continued their search.

Daniel studied the access log.

"There's another problem."

Lucian turned.

"What now?"

Daniel pointed to the screen.

"The internal access wasn't made with one of our security credentials."

Peter leaned closer.

"What was it made with?"

Daniel swallowed.

"A hospital account."

Mara felt the blood drain from her face.

"What hospital?"

Daniel looked at her.

"Chicago Memorial."

The same hospital where she had been born.

The same hospital where Gabriel had disappeared.

The same hospital whose records Thomas Bennett had tried to preserve.

Lucian's expression turned grim.

"Can you trace the account?"

Daniel began typing.

"Give me a minute."

The screen filled with lines of code.

Then a name appeared.

Account holder: Eleanor Bennett.

Mara stopped breathing.

"No."

Lucian stared at the screen.

"That account was used tonight?"

Daniel nodded.

"At 8:41 p.m."

Mara shook her head.

"My mother was at the estate."

Peter's expression darkened.

"Then someone has access to her credentials."

"Or someone is using her identity," Lucian said.

Mara looked toward the door.

She remembered Eleanor clutching the photograph.

Her fear.

Her desperate insistence that the truth remain hidden.

What if her mother had been lying about more than her death?

What if she had helped create the very conspiracy she claimed to fear?

Mara pressed her fingers against her temples.

"I can't do this anymore."

Lucian stepped toward her.

"You don't have to solve everything tonight."

"But what if she's involved?"

He held her gaze.

"Then we'll find out."

She looked at him.

"And if she is?"

Lucian answered carefully.

"Then you'll decide what relationship you want with her after you know the truth."

Mara nodded, but her fear remained.

A few seconds later, the guard returned from upstairs.

He carried a small black device inside a clear evidence bag.

"We found this beneath the bed."

Daniel took the bag.

The device was no larger than a matchbox.

A blinking red light shone through its casing.

Peter examined it.

"Audio transmitter."

Lucian's expression darkened.

"How long has it been there?"

The guard shook his head.

"We don't know."

Mara felt cold.

Someone had been listening to her private conversations.

Her fear.

Her apologies.

Her conversations with Lucian.

Everything.

Lucian turned toward the guard.

"Was anything else disturbed?"

The guard hesitated.

"Yes, sir."

"What?"

"The mattress had been lifted. The drawers were open. Someone searched the room."

Mara looked at him.

"Did they find anything?"

The guard lowered his eyes.

"We don't know."

Lucian's voice became sharper.

"Search it again."

The guard hurried upstairs.

Peter stared at the transmitter.

"Whoever planted this knew you'd bring Mara here."

Lucian shook his head.

"Or they knew the residence was available."

Daniel looked toward the screen.

"Boss, I traced the hospital account."

Lucian turned.

"To whom?"

Daniel's face had gone pale.

"It wasn't accessed remotely."

He pointed to a location field.

"The login originated from a device inside this house."

Mara looked around the room.

Everyone stood motionless.

Lucian's gaze moved from Peter to Daniel, then to the guards.

"Which device?"

Daniel swallowed.

"The terminal in the east security room."

Lucian turned toward the hallway.

"Who has access to that room?"

Daniel answered quietly.

"Me. You. And your father."

The words hung in the air.

Mara looked at Lucian.

"Your father isn't here."

"No," Lucian replied.

His phone began vibrating.

A call from an unknown number.

He answered without speaking.

For several seconds, there was only static.

Then Vittorio Moretti's voice came through.

"Lucian, listen carefully. Do not let Mara leave that house."

Lucian straightened.

"Where are you?"

"There's no time."

"What happened?"

Vittorio's breathing was ragged.

"I found out who took Gabriel."

Lucian gripped the phone.

"Tell me."

Vittorio paused.

Then he spoke four words.

"Your mother was still alive."

Mara stared at Lucian.

The color drained from his face.

Before he could respond, a second voice came through the phone.

A woman's voice.

Calm.

Familiar.

And terrified.

"Lucian, darling, don't believe your father."

Lucian stopped breathing.

Because the woman speaking was his mother.

The woman he had buried twelve years earlier.

May you like

And before he could say her name, she whispered:

"Gabriel is standing right behind you."
