Chapter 8 - The Two Babies Nobody Was Supposed to Find

Vittorio Moretti stood in the doorway holding a photograph of two newborn babies and whispered, "Lucian, one of those children was never supposed to leave this hospital alive."
Lucian stared at his father.
For twelve years, he had believed the man standing before him was dead. He had mourned him, buried him, and built an empire in the shadow of his absence.
Now Vittorio was alive, his face drawn with exhaustion, his eyes fixed on the photograph in his hand.
Behind Lucian, Sophia Moretti clutched the edge of her hospital bed.
"Vittorio, don't," she whispered.
His gaze shifted toward her.
"You've hidden the truth long enough."
Sophia's expression crumpled.
Lucian rose slowly.
"What truth?"
Vittorio looked at his son.
"The truth about who you are."
Daniel appeared at the far end of the corridor, breathing hard. His weapon remained lowered, but his eyes moved between Vittorio and Sophia with unmistakable suspicion.
"Boss, we need to leave. There are vehicles outside."
Vittorio ignored him.
He stepped into the room and placed the photograph on the bedside table.
Two newborn babies lay beneath a white hospital blanket. Each wore a silver bracelet engraved with a tiny star.
Mara's bracelet.
The one Adrian had taken.
Lucian leaned closer.
One baby had a faint crescent-shaped mark near his left shoulder. The other had a small, dark birthmark beneath his right ear.
Lucian touched the photograph.
He had a birthmark beneath his right ear.
He had always considered it an ordinary family trait.
Now he wondered whether his entire life had been arranged around that tiny mark.
"Which baby am I?" he asked.
Vittorio closed his eyes.
Sophia began crying.
"Lucian, please."
He turned toward her.
"Which baby am I?"
She looked at Vittorio.
Then at her son.
And finally, she whispered, "You are the child I carried for nine months. But you are not the child your father registered under your name."
The room seemed to tilt.
Lucian gripped the bedside table.
"What does that mean?"
Sophia reached for his hand.
"It means someone changed the hospital records before you were taken home."
"Taken home by whom?"
She couldn't answer.
Vittorio did.
"By me."
Lucian stared at him.
For the first time in his life, he wanted to strike his father.
Instead, he stepped backward.
"You stole a baby?"
Vittorio's expression twisted with pain.
"I saved one."
"Which one?"
The older man looked at the photograph.
"That's the question that has destroyed our family."
Twelve years earlier, Vittorio had been a powerful man with enemies who understood that money alone could not protect a family.
Charles Mercer had been one of those enemies.
Mercer controlled a network of fraudulent investment companies, corrupt officials, and private security contractors. He had spent years hiding stolen assets behind false identities.
Thomas Bennett had discovered the operation.
He had also discovered that Mercer intended to use newborn children to create false inheritance claims and conceal the ownership of several shell companies.
The babies born at Chicago Memorial Hospital that November were connected to a plan far more dangerous than either family understood.
Sophia had been told that one child had died shortly after birth.
Vittorio had been told that his wife had delivered a single healthy son.
The hospital records supported both stories.
But the photograph showed two babies.
And a nurse's handwritten note revealed that someone had ordered both records altered before dawn.
"Who ordered it?" Lucian asked.
Vittorio looked toward the corridor.
"Charles Mercer."
Daniel stepped into the room.
"Then Gabriel was the child Mercer wanted."
Vittorio nodded.
"Gabriel was his biological son. He wanted the boy's identity erased so he could eventually inherit assets under a different name."
Lucian's jaw tightened.
"And the other child?"
Vittorio's silence lasted too long.
Sophia answered instead.
"The other child was supposed to disappear."
Lucian looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because Thomas had discovered the arrangement. He knew that if the children remained together, someone would eventually connect them to the altered records."
Sophia squeezed Lucian's hand.
"Your father came to the hospital that night. He said he could save one of the babies."
Lucian stared at Vittorio.
"You took me."
Vittorio nodded.
"Yes."
"And left Gabriel?"
"I thought Charles would raise him without knowing what had happened to the records."
"That makes no sense."
"I know."
Vittorio's voice broke.
"I was wrong."
Lucian looked away.
For years, he had believed his father was a strong man who never made mistakes.
Now he was learning that one of those mistakes might have determined the lives of two families.
"Where is Gabriel?" he asked.
Vittorio's face hardened.
"Alive."
"Where?"
"I don't know."
Lucian laughed bitterly.
"Of course you don't."
Vittorio accepted the accusation without protest.
"I searched for him for years. Every lead ended in a dead end. Then, six years ago, someone began moving money through accounts connected to Adrian Vale."
Daniel stepped forward.
"That's when the payments started."
Vittorio nodded.
"Adrian was hired to locate Mara because Thomas left something with her."
"The ledger," Lucian said.
"More than the ledger."
Vittorio looked at the photograph.
"Thomas left the evidence that could identify both children. He believed Mara would eventually find it."
Lucian turned toward the door.
"Then we find her and get the records."
Sophia suddenly grabbed his wrist.
"No!"
He stopped.
She was trembling.
"Your father isn't telling you everything."
Vittorio closed his eyes.
Sophia looked directly at Lucian.
"Gabriel wasn't the only child Charles wanted to erase."
She swallowed.
"He wanted you erased too."
At the secure residence, Mara woke to the sound of someone knocking.
She sat upright, disoriented.
For a moment, she forgot where she was.
Then she remembered the wedding, the hospital, the hidden transmitter, and Lucian leaving to meet the woman who claimed to be his mother.
She checked her phone.
No messages.
No missed calls.
Her chest tightened.
Lucian had promised to contact her.
She tried calling him.
The call went directly to voicemail.
Mara stared at the screen.
Then she called Daniel.
No answer.
She got out of bed and wrapped herself in a robe.
Another knock sounded.
"Mara?"
Peter Callahan's voice.
She opened the door.
He stood in the hallway holding a paper cup of coffee.
"Sorry to wake you."
"Where's Lucian?"
Peter hesitated.
"He's at the annex."
"Did he find his mother?"
"Yes."
Mara exhaled shakily.
"Is she alive?"
"Yes."
She closed her eyes.
Relief came first.
Then fear.
"Why hasn't he called?"
Peter looked uncomfortable.
"Something happened."
Mara's heart began pounding.
"What?"
"Vittorio arrived."
She stared.
"His father?"
Peter nodded.
"And he brought information about the hospital records."
Mara gripped the doorframe.
"Is Lucian okay?"
"I don't know."
The honesty frightened her more than reassurance would have.
She stepped into the hallway.
"I'm going there."
Peter shook his head.
"That's not safe."
"Neither is staying here when someone has been watching my bedroom."
"Mara—"
She looked at him.
"I'm done waiting for other people to decide what I can handle."
Peter studied her for a moment.
Then he nodded.
"All right. But we're going together."
At the annex, Lucian stood beside the hospital bed while Sophia explained what had happened the night he was born.
Vittorio had arrived after midnight.
A nurse had told him that one baby had died.
But when he saw the second child, he noticed the silver bracelet and the handwritten code on the hospital chart.
R-17.
He realized that the baby had been included in Mercer's plan.
He took the child.
He paid a doctor to alter the records.
And he told Sophia that their son had been declared dead because the family was in danger.
For years, she believed him.
Until she discovered that the child she had raised was connected to a hospital record that belonged to someone else.
"Why didn't you tell me?" Lucian asked.
Sophia wiped her eyes.
"Because every time I tried, your father reminded me what would happen if Charles found out."
"And then you disappeared."
Vittorio lowered his head.
"I arranged her disappearance."
Lucian turned toward him.
"Again."
"I believed it was the only way to keep her alive."
"You let me bury you. You let me believe my mother was dead. You let me build my life on a lie."
Vittorio's eyes filled.
"I know."
"No, you don't."
Lucian's voice cracked.
"You don't know what it was like to stand beside your father's grave and wonder whether you could have saved him. You don't know what it was like to wake up every night thinking I should have noticed something."
Vittorio said nothing.
Lucian stepped closer.
"I spent twelve years trying to become the man you wanted me to be."
His eyes burned.
"And all that time, you were hiding from me."
Sophia reached for him.
He let her take his hand.
"I'm sorry," she whispered.
He looked at her.
"I need the truth."
She nodded.
Then she reached beneath her pillow and removed a small envelope.
"I kept this because I knew one day you would ask."
Lucian took it.
Inside was a hospital bracelet.
Silver.
Engraved with a tiny star.
Beneath the star was a number.
Not a name.
A patient identification code.
R-17.
Lucian stared at it.
Sophia whispered, "This belonged to the baby who disappeared."
He looked at the photograph.
Then at the bracelet.
"Gabriel?"
Sophia shook her head.
"No."
She looked at Vittorio.
"Your father knows who it belonged to."
Lucian turned.
Vittorio's face had gone pale.
"Father?"
The older man looked toward the window.
"I never told you because I was afraid of what you'd do when you learned the truth."
Lucian held up the bracelet.
"Whose was it?"
Vittorio took a slow breath.
Then he answered.
"Mara's."
Mara arrived at the annex just before dawn.
Peter accompanied her through a side entrance.
The corridor smelled of dust and old disinfectant.
A security guard escorted them to room seventeen.
When Mara entered, Lucian turned immediately.
For a second, neither spoke.
Then she crossed the room and embraced him.
He held her tightly.
"I was worried," she whispered.
"I'm sorry."
She pulled back to look at his face.
"What happened?"
Lucian hesitated.
Mara's expression changed.
"Lucian, don't."
He lowered his eyes.
"I found my mother."
Mara exhaled.
"That's good."
"She's alive."
"I know."
He looked surprised.
"Peter told me."
Lucian nodded.
Then he glanced toward the hospital bed.
Sophia sat beside Vittorio.
Mara had seen photographs of Lucian's mother before. She recognized the dark eyes and delicate features.
Sophia looked at her with tears in her eyes.
"Mara."
Mara approached cautiously.
"Mrs. Moretti."
Sophia shook her head.
"Please. Call me Sophia."
Mara nodded.
Then she noticed the hospital bracelet on the table.
The tiny silver star.
Her stomach tightened.
"Where did you get that?"
Sophia looked at Lucian.
He answered quietly.
"It belonged to you."
Mara stared.
"What?"
Vittorio stood.
"Your father tried to protect you."
Mara looked between them.
"My father gave me a bracelet when I was a child. It had a little star on it."
Sophia nodded.
"This is the original hospital bracelet."
Mara felt her knees weaken.
"But I was born at Chicago Memorial."
"Yes," Sophia whispered.
"Then why does Lucian's father have it?"
Vittorio lowered his head.
"Because the night you were born, someone tried to remove you from the hospital."
Silence filled the room.
Mara looked at Lucian.
He took her hand.
"There's more."
She swallowed.
"Tell me."
Lucian looked toward the photograph of the two newborns.
"The hospital records were changed. Two babies were born that night, but only one was officially registered."
Mara stared at the image.
She recognized the bracelet.
She recognized the tiny star.
Then she noticed the birthmark on the baby lying on the right.
A small crescent beneath the shoulder.
She looked down at her own shoulder, where a faint crescent-shaped mark had been present since childhood.
Her breath caught.
"That's me."
Sophia nodded through tears.
"Yes."
Mara looked at the other baby.
"Then who is he?"
Vittorio closed his eyes.
"Gabriel Mercer."
Mara shook her head.
"But Gabriel is a man."
"He is."
"And he says he's my husband."
Lucian's expression hardened.
"He isn't."
Mara looked at the birth records.
"Then why did someone forge that certificate?"
Vittorio hesitated.
"Because Charles Mercer wanted to use you to claim control over the assets Thomas Bennett had hidden."
Mara's voice trembled.
"But why would I matter to him?"
Sophia reached for her hand.
"Because your father was not your biological father."
Mara went still.
The room seemed to disappear around her.
"What?"
Sophia began crying.
"Thomas raised you. He loved you as his own. But the man who fathered you was someone Charles Mercer wanted to destroy."
Mara pulled her hand away.
"No."
Vittorio looked at her.
"Mara—"
"No!"
Her voice echoed through the room.
She backed toward the wall.
"My father was Thomas Bennett."
"He was," Sophia said softly. "In every way that mattered."
Mara shook her head.
"Then why are you telling me this?"
Sophia's tears fell freely.
"Because the truth is the only thing that can protect you now."
Mara looked at Lucian.
He appeared as stunned as she felt.
She wanted him to deny it.
To tell her that everyone was mistaken.
Instead, he held her gaze and said, "We'll verify everything."
She swallowed.
"Do you believe them?"
"I believe we need proof."
Mara looked back at the photograph.
Two babies.
Two lives.
A history rewritten before either child could speak.
And somewhere in Chicago, a man calling himself her husband was searching for the same truth.
At 6:12 a.m., Daniel entered the room carrying a laptop.
"Boss, we recovered the original hospital registry."
Lucian turned.
"From where?"
"An archive beneath the old medical records office. Someone had sealed it inside a locked cabinet."
Daniel placed the laptop on the table.
"The document was scanned before the archive was closed."
Mara approached.
The screen displayed a hospital register.
Two births.
Two patient numbers.
Two sets of fingerprints from the attending physician.
The first record listed Gabriel Mercer.
The second listed Mara Bennett.
But beside Mara's name was a handwritten note.
Biological father: restricted by court order.
Mara stared.
"Who ordered the restriction?"
Daniel scrolled down.
A signature appeared.
Vittorio Moretti.
Lucian turned slowly toward his father.
"You knew."
Vittorio didn't deny it.
"I knew Thomas wasn't your biological father, Mara."
Mara felt sick.
"Who is?"
Vittorio looked at her.
Then at Lucian.
His voice dropped.
"The man who paid Adrian to marry you."
The room fell silent.
Mara stared at the signature.
Daniel enlarged the scanned document.
At the bottom of the page was the name of the man who had signed the original court order.
Charles Mercer.
Mara shook her head.
"Charles Mercer is Gabriel's father."
Vittorio nodded.
"And yours."
Lucian stepped between Mara and his father.
"That's impossible."
Sophia covered her face.
Vittorio looked at them both.
"I wish it were."
Mara couldn't breathe.
Her marriage to Adrian had been arranged to find her father's ledger.
Gabriel had claimed she was his wife.
Charles Mercer had orchestrated the entire conspiracy.
And now she was being told that the man responsible for destroying her family was her biological father.
Daniel stared at the screen.
Then his phone rang.
He answered.
Listened.
And slowly turned toward Lucian.
"Boss, we have another problem."
Lucian's voice was cold.
"What?"
Daniel swallowed.
"Gabriel has entered the building."
A security alarm sounded.
Footsteps thundered through the corridor.
Then a man's voice called from outside the room.
"Mara!"
She froze.
Gabriel.
He sounded furious.
"Ask Vittorio what happened to the third baby."
Mara turned toward Vittorio.
His face went completely white.
"Third baby?" Lucian repeated.
Gabriel struck the door.
Once.
Twice.
Then he shouted the words that made Sophia collapse against the bed.
"Your father didn't steal one child that night!"
The door handle began to turn.
May you like
"HE STOLE TWO!"
And when the door swung open, Gabriel was holding a photograph of three newborn babies.
