Part 1: The Echo of a Slap

The slap happened before anyone could stop it.

Chloe Lancaster turned sharply, her diamond earrings flashing under the chandelier, and struck the young waitress across the face.

The sound cracked through the ballroom.

The music stopped.

Guests froze with champagne glasses halfway to their lips.

The waitress stumbled back, one hand flying to her cheek.

She was wearing a black service uniform, her hair pinned messily from a long shift, her eyes already full of tears before the pain even settled.

Chloe glared at her.

“How dare you bump into me on my birthday?”

The waitress did not defend herself.

She did not run.

She stood there trembling, holding her red cheek with one hand and clutching a small wrapped box with the other.

Then she looked at Chloe and whispered through tears:

“Happy birthday, sister.”

The room went silent.

Not polite silence.

Not shocked silence.

A dead silence.

Chloe’s face drained of color.

Her hand rose slowly to cover her mouth.

“My sister...”

The old man at the head table dropped his cane.

The woman beside him went pale.

And the waitress, still crying in front of everyone who had just watched her be humiliated, opened the small box.

Inside was half of a gold butterfly necklace.

The other half was hanging around Chloe’s neck.
