Chapter 6: Shadows at the Door

The sun had dipped below the horizon by the time Julian and Maya returned to the quiet suburban house, the headlights of Julian’s sedan cutting long beams through the gathering dusk. As they pulled into the driveway, Maya noticed a sleek, unfamiliar silver sedan parked along the curb near the mailbox. A figure was standing by the front porch steps, silhouetted against the porch light. As the car engine died, the figure turned sharply toward them, revealing Elena’s divorce lawyer, a sharp-featured man named Arthur Pendelton, clutching a thick leather portfolio under his arm.

Julian unbuckled his seatbelt with a heavy sigh, turning to Maya before opening the door. "Stay in the car for a minute," he instructed quietly, his hand resting on the center console. Maya shook her head, her jaw set with quiet determination. "No, Julian. It's my house too, or at least my home. I'm not hiding in the car anymore," she replied, pushing her door open and stepping out into the cool evening air. Julian gave a small, appreciative nod, stepping out beside her to face the unexpected visitor on the steps.

Arthur Pendelton adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses as they walked up the driveway, offering a tight, professional smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Mr. Vance, Mr. Julian. And Miss Maya, I presume," Arthur greeted smoothly, his voice carrying the practiced cadence of a litigator used to intimidation. "I'm here on behalf of Mrs. Elena Vance regarding her sudden departure and the subsequent freeze placed on her personal accounts this afternoon. We consider this a hostile and premature escalation of marital dissolution protocols."

Julian stepped in front of Maya defensively, his eyes narrowing as he looked down at the lawyer. "Your client attempted to frame a teenager for grand larceny using a staged theft in this exact living room, Arthur. I have high-definition video proof of the entire act. A financial freeze is the least of her legal concerns right now," Julian said, his voice ringing with absolute authority. Arthur’s confident veneer flickered for a fraction of a second, betraying the fact that Elena hadn't told her own legal counsel the full truth about how she left the premises.

The lawyer cleared his throat, shifting his portfolio to his other hand. "Mrs. Vance maintains that any security footage was selectively edited and taken out of context. Furthermore, she demands immediate access to her personal belongings and a preliminary settlement offer before we escalate this to a public courtroom battle," Arthur stated, though his tone lacked its initial bite. Maya stepped forward, her grey UCLA hoodie stark against the formal corporate attire of the lawyer. "She can pick up her clothes when the police finish reviewing the unedited footage," Maya said steadily, looking the attorney dead in the eye. Arthur stared at her in surprise, realized he had no leverage left, and turned silently toward his car.
