Chapter 9: The Confrontation at the Office

The polished marble floors of Marcus Vance’s downtown law office echoed with the sharp click of expensive shoes as Julian and Maya walked toward the executive conference room. Waiting inside was not just Marcus, but Detective Sergeant Miller of the municipal police department, a tall, weathered man in a plain grey suit with a notebook open in his lap. The atmosphere in the room was heavy, smelling of fresh coffee and legal urgency. As Julian and Maya took their seats, Detective Miller closed his pen with a sharp click, his serious eyes fixing directly on Julian.

"Mr. Vance, your attorney provided us with the encrypted flash drive and the unedited security footage of the incident from three days ago," Detective Miller began, his voice deep and deliberate. "We've verified the file integrity and cross-referenced the financial records with our state database. The alias Elena used during her previous marriages matches an active warrant for wire fraud in Massachusetts under a different surname. Combined with the staged theft at your residence, we have sufficient probable cause to issue an immediate warrant for her arrest."

Maya let out a breath she felt she had been holding for days, feeling the physical tension drain from her shoulders for the first time in months. Julian nodded, sliding the physical copies of the trust fund audits across the table. "She planned the entire sequence of events to isolate my stepdaughter and misappropriate protected estate assets. We want to press full charges for fraud, extortion, and filing a false police report," Julian stated firmly, leaving no room for negotiation or compromise.

Marcus Vance adjusted his glasses, folding his hands neatly on the table. "Given the interstate nature of her previous activities, her legal counsel Arthur Pendelton will likely try to negotiate a quiet surrender to avoid a public trial. However, our stance is non-negotiable: full restitution of the diverted trust funds and an immediate restraining order preventing her from coming within five hundred yards of either of my clients," the attorney added, his tone leaving no doubt about their legal positioning.

Just as Detective Miller stood to depart to coordinate the arrest warrant with local patrols, the conference room door swung open without warning. Arthur Pendelton rushed into the room, looking uncharacteristically flustered, holding a stack of emergency injunction papers in his hand. "Hold on, gentlemen—my client is willing to offer an immediate separation agreement without contest if you agree to drop the criminal fraud charges," Arthur blurted out, breathing heavily. Julian stood up to his full height, looking down at the desperate attorney with cold, unyielding eyes. "Tell Elena she should have thought about criminal charges before she tried to destroy an innocent girl's life. The police are already on their way," Julian said quietly. Arthur froze, realizing the trap had finally snapped shut.
