Chapter 12

They did not owe him forgiveness.

He received thirty months in federal custody and three years of supervision.

Before surrendering, he transferred the Duca estate into an independent charitable trust.

One wing became temporary housing for families of injured workers and first responders.

The storm room was sealed as evidence until every trial ended.

I did not move into the mansion.

That surprised people.

They expected gratitude to look like residence.

I moved with Emma into a two-bedroom apartment in Queens with yellow kitchen curtains and a blue ceramic bowl beside the door.

Both keys were mine.

I returned to nursing school.

The first semester nearly defeated me.

Anatomy at seven.

Clinical rotation at noon.

Emma’s preschool pickup at five.

Studying after she slept.

Marisol called twice a week and asked one question.

“Did you eat?”

Vincent sent groceries anonymously until I caught him.

“Stop.”

“You require food.”

“I require the right to buy it.”

“The trust pays your tuition.”

“Under an independent scholarship.”

“Yes.”

“Groceries are personal.”

He nodded.

Then handed me a receipt for the final delivery.

“Documentation.”

I laughed despite myself.

Lorenzo wrote from prison.

The first letter contained no request.

Sophia,

I knew Victoria’s company financed Ashford Heights before I knew Daniel’s name. I did not know the safety report existed until you brought it to the storm room. That does not remove the profit I received from the project. I have directed my share of the recovered funds into the workers’ settlement trust. This is not compensation for Daniel. Nothing is. It is the return of money I should not keep.

The second letter addressed Emma.

He gave it to me sealed.

I opened it before deciding whether she should see it.

Little One,

Bunny was correct. I was afraid. You sat beside me anyway.

I read it to her.

She dictated the answer.

Dear Sir,

Bunny says being scared is okay if you do not be mean.

Lorenzo wrote back:

Bunny has superior counsel.

The letters continued.

He did not ask me to wait.

I did not promise.

I visited once during his first year.

The federal visiting room smelled of disinfectant, burnt coffee, and wet coats. Lorenzo wore plain khaki. No watch. No gun. No men standing behind him.
