Chapter 4 - The Poisoned Pen

The exposure of the Caldwell tape sent shockwaves through the financial world. By Tuesday afternoon, federal marshals raided the offices of Caldwell Logistics. Julian Caldwell was arrested at an airfield in New Jersey trying to board a private jet to the Bahamas, and Diana was taken into custody from her penthouse in Manhattan.

It should have been over. But evil of that caliber rarely dies without leaving poison in the well.

While the legal battle shifted to the courtrooms, a different kind of war began in the media.

On Wednesday morning, every tabloid newspaper and gossip website launched a coordinated smear campaign. The headlines were vile, sensationalized, and ruthless:

"THE MAID'S SCHEME: HOW AN EX-CON'S DAUGHTER MANIPULATED A BILLIONAIRE" "FROM MOP TO MILLIONS: ROSA SANTOS’S DARK PAST EXPOSED" "IS MARCUS ELLISON’S NEW ASSISTANT A HIRED CORPORATE SPY?"

I sat at my new desk in the executive suite, staring at the computer screen, my hands trembling violently.

They had dug up everything.

They found out that five years ago, my ex-fiancé—Lily’s father, a small-time scam artist named Hector—had used my name and identity without my knowledge to lease a fraudulent warehouse for a stolen goods ring. When the police raided the place, Hector vanished, leaving me to be arrested. Though the charges were eventually dropped due to lack of evidence, the arrest record remained in the state database—a permanent black mark I could never scrub clean.

They painted me as a criminal mastermind. They called Lily an "anchor baby" meant to trap Marcus into a financial settlement. They even leaked photos of me carrying trash bags out of the Ellison estate from two months ago, comparing them to photos of me wearing the new suit Marcus had bought me.

"Rosa."

I jumped, quickly trying to wipe away the tear that had spilled down my cheek.

Marcus was standing in the doorway of his office. He had watched me reading the articles.

"Don't read that trash," he said, stepping into the room and shutting the door behind him.

"They're calling me a criminal, Marcus," I sobbed, unable to hold back the pain any longer. "They're saying I used my baby girl to trap you. They're telling the whole world that I spent a night in a holding cell five years ago..."

"I already knew about Hector," Marcus said calmly.

I froze, looking up at him through tear-stained eyes. "What?"

"I run background checks on everyone who enters my home, Rosa," Marcus said, sitting on the corner of my desk. "I knew about the dropped charges three months ago. I knew you were innocent. I knew Hector took off and left you with nothing while you were six months pregnant."

"Then... then why didn't you fire me back then?" I asked, my voice cracking. "Most rich people wouldn't want someone with a police record anywhere near their crystal and silver."

Marcus looked down at his hands for a moment, his brow furrowing as if wrestling with a deep, painful memory of his own.

"Because twelve years ago," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a soft, gravelly tone, "my own father was framed for corporate fraud by his business partners. He didn't have the money to fight them. He died in a state prison waiting for a trial that never came."

My heart stopped. I had never heard this story. The public history of Ellison Global always began with Marcus as a self-made prodigy who built the company from the ground up in his twenties.

"I built this company so no one could ever destroy my family again," Marcus whispered, looking directly into my eyes. "I know what it looks like when an innocent person is chewed up by people with money and power. When I saw your record, and then I saw you working twenty hours a day to feed your daughter... I didn't see a criminal, Rosa. I saw my father."

The air between us grew thick with an intensity that had nothing to do with contracts or corporate espionage. For the first time, I didn't see Marcus Ellison the billionaire CEO. I saw a man who carried a deep, burning fire of grief beneath his flawless suits.

He reached out and gently rested his thumb against my cheek, wiping away a stray tear. His touch was warm, sending a strange, electric shiver through my entire body.

"They are going to attack us from every angle, Rosa," Marcus murmured, his face inches from mine. "They are going to use the media, the courts, and the board. But I am not going to let them destroy you. Do you trust me?"

I looked into his steel-gray eyes, feeling a profound wave of warmth wash over the cold fear in my chest.

"I trust you, Marcus," I whispered.

May you like

Before he could say another word, the intercom on my desk buzzed loudly, breaking the silence.

"Mr. Ellison," Victoria’s voice came through the speaker, tight and panicked. "You need to come down to the lobby immediately. Hector Vance—the father of Rosa’s child—is downstairs with a camera crew from Channel 4 News. He’s claiming you kidnapped his daughter."
