Chapter 9 - A Place to Call Home

Two months later.

The snow was falling softly over New York City, turning the bustling streets into a quiet, white wonderland.

The Caldwell trial had ended in a full conviction. Richard Caldwell received fifteen years in federal prison, Julian was sentenced to ten, and Diana was sentenced to seven years for corporate espionage and conspiracy. The Caldwell assets were liquidated, and a court-ordered restitution fund of twenty million dollars was awarded to my mother’s estate—a justice thirty years late, but finally delivered.

I had used a portion of that money to establish the Maria Santos Foundation, an organization dedicated to providing legal aid and child-care assistance to single mothers working in low-income service jobs.

On this cold December afternoon, the penthouse was decorated with a tall, shimmering Christmas tree covered in gold ornaments and white lights.

In the living room, Lily was laughing hysterically as she ran in circles around the plush rug. Right behind her, crawling on his hands and knees with a Santa hat pulled down over his eyes, was Marcus Ellison—the fearsome billionaire CEO, currently playing the role of the "Monster under the Christmas Tree."

"I'm gonna get you, Miss Lily!" Marcus roared playfully, grabbing her tiny ankle as she squealed with delight and collapsed onto the soft rug.

"Mommy! Save me!" Lily giggled, kicking her little pink socks in the air.

I sat on the sofa, holding a mug of hot chocolate, laughing so hard tears came to my eyes.

"I don't think I can save you, Lily," I teased. "The Monster looks very hungry!"

Marcus flipped off his Santa hat, revealing his messy hair and glowing gray eyes. He sat up, pulling Lily into a warm bear hug and tickling her belly until she was practically gasping for air.

Watching them together, my heart felt so full it almost hurt.

In just a few short months, Marcus hadn't just protected us—he had become the anchor of our lives. He was the man who read Lily bedtime stories every night at seven PM, no matter how busy his board meetings were. He was the man who spent two hours helping her build a cardboard castle in the middle of his pristine living room.

"Alright, small human," Marcus said, placing Lily gently on her feet. "Time for your nap before the big dinner."

"Is Mr. Ears tired too?" Lily asked, holding up her worn rag rabbit.

"Mr. Ears is exhausted," Marcus said solemnly, giving the rabbit a tiny pat on the head. "He told me he needs at least two hours of sleep."

Satisfied with the answer, Lily skipped down the hallway toward her bedroom, her new nanny following right behind her with a warm smile.

Once the hallway door closed, Marcus stood up, dusting off his trousers. He walked over to the sofa and sat down right beside me, slipping his arm around my waist and pulling me into his side.

"You look beautiful today," he whispered, kissing the top of my head.

"I'm wearing an oversized sweater and sweatpants, Marcus," I giggled, resting my head against his chest, listening to the steady, comforting beat of his heart.

"You look beautiful every day," he corrected gently.

We sat in quiet comfort for a long time, watching the snowflakes dance against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

"I talked to the foundation director today," I said softly. "We approved our first fifty legal grants for working mothers in the city."

"I know," Marcus smiled. "Victoria showed me the report. You’re building something incredible, Rosa."

"We are," I corrected, looking up at him. "None of this would exist if you hadn't looked under that table."

Marcus looked down at me, his gray eyes softening with an intense, devotion-filled warmth.

"Looking under that table was the best decision of my life," he said quietly. "But staying by your side... that’s the best choice I’ll ever make."

May you like

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-covered box.

My breath caught in my throat.
