Chapter 13 - Midnight Confessions

Daniel arrived at the cottage at two in the morning. His coat was damp with rain, his silver hair disheveled, and his eyes bloodshot behind his wire-rimmed glasses. As he stepped across the threshold, he didn't hug his daughter. His gaze locked instantly onto the kitchen island, where the opened locket and the brass key lay exposed under the light.

"Who gave you the key?" Daniel asked, his voice barely louder than a whisper, closing the front door behind him with an ominous click.

Lily stood beside Emma, her arms folded defensively across her chest. "Someone slipped an envelope into my car at the resort. Claire’s handwriting, Dad. Claire is out. She’s watching us."

Daniel closed his eyes, slumping into a barstool as if the air had been violently knocked out of his lungs. He buried his face in his calloused hands. "She was paroled six weeks ago," he muttered. "Her lawyers negotiated an early release on grounds of medical necessity. She has terminal cancer, Lily. I thought... I prayed she would just go away and die in peace."

"She left a note, Daniel," Emma interjected, her voice firm, protective. "She wrote that you didn't protect Lily—that you traded her. What does that mean?"

Daniel’s head snapped up. In his eyes, Lily saw something she had never witnessed in her entire life: profound, terrifying guilt.

"Your mother didn't leave because she stopped loving us, Lily," Daniel choked out, his voice cracking. "Twenty-five years ago, the shipping logistics company I ran with Eleanor and Thomas was laundering money for a cartel out of Montreal. I didn't know it at first. By the time I discovered the false manifests, Thomas had already implicated my name on the offshore accounts."

Lily felt the room tilt around her. "You told me Mom had an emotional breakdown and ran away."

"Because the cartel threatened to kill you!" Daniel shouted, slamming his palm onto the island, startling both women. "They sent a man to your preschool. They took photos of you on the swings! Beth found out. She went to the cartel’s proxy—a corrupt corporate fixer named Victor Vance. She offered them everything: our family trust, our real estate, our dignity, if they would spare you. But Vance wanted leverage. He demanded proof that our family would never go to the FBI."

Daniel pointed a shaking finger at the microfilm. "That film contains the digitized ledger of every single dirty dollar that flowed through Eleanor and Thomas's shell companies. Beth hid it inside the locket and vanished to draw the heat away from you. She gave her life up so you could grow up safe."

"Then who is Claire?" Lily whispered, her eyes brimming with tears of rage and confusion. "Why was Claire at that altar with you?"

Daniel looked down at the floor, unable to meet his daughter's gaze. "Claire wasn't my fiancée, Lily. Claire was Victor Vance’s daughter."
