Chapter 16 - The Web of Lies

Lily sat on the floor of the vault’s viewing booth, tears cutting hot tracks through her makeup as the cassette player whirred to life. Emma had found a portable tape player provided in the booth’s amenities drawer.
The hiss of magnetic tape filled the small room, followed by the muffled sound of a stormy night recorded decades ago.
*“You signed the papers, Claire!”* Daniel’s voice boomed from the speaker, younger, sharper, and filled with venom. *“You took five hundred thousand dollars from the family account! You are Lily’s surrogate on paper, but Beth is her legal mother!”*
*“You lied to me, Daniel!”* Claire’s voice screamed back, choked with hysterics. *“You told me we would raise her together! Then you and Beth used my father’s criminal background to threaten me with prison if I ever approached the house! She is my flesh and blood! Look at her eyes—she has my eyes!”*
*“If you show up at that chapel on Saturday,”* Daniel’s cold voice warned, *“I will hand the cartel ledgers directly to the U.S. Attorney. Your father will spend the rest of his life in ADX Florence, and you will be charged as an accomplice. Take your money and disappear.”*
*“I don't want your money, Daniel. I want my baby girl. And I will tear that family apart before I let Beth pretend Lillian belongs to her.”*
The tape ended with the sharp sound of a receiver slamming down.
Silence swallowed the vault.
Lily stared at her own trembling hands. Her entire identity—her twenty-eight years of existence, the trauma of the necklace, the saintly image of her returning mother Beth, the protective father figure she had worshipped—was an elaborate, manufactured stage play.
Claire hadn't been an assassin trying to rob an innocent child. Claire was a broken, exploited young woman who had been coerced into giving up her baby, and when she tried to reclaim Lily at the altar, Daniel and his family had branded her an insane criminal, framed her, and locked her in a cage for over two decades.

"They used me," Lily whispered, her voice dead, emotionless. "They used the necklace as a distraction. When Claire tried to grab me, she wasn't ripping the necklace off to steal it... she was trying to pull me away from Beth."
"Lily," Emma said gently, kneeling beside her and gripping her shoulders. "We need to leave. Right now. Daniel tracked your phone here."
