The Heir Who Stood Again / Chapter 4 / 5

Chapter 4 - The Heir They Needed Broken

Vanessa broke first.

Julian broke faster.

Police found him at a private airfield before dawn.

He had cash.

A passport.

And Marcus Hale's missing phone.

The messages on it exposed everything.

Julian had planned Adrian's crash.

Vanessa knew.

Initially, she believed the goal was to frighten Adrian into stepping away from the company.

Then Julian explained the real opportunity.

A disabled Adrian could be controlled.

A dead Adrian could not.

They bribed a physician to alter medication.

Forged rehabilitation reports.

Pressured board members.

Prepared documents declaring Adrian permanently incapacitated.

Vanessa played the grieving partner publicly.

Privately, she waited for control of his estate.

But Marcus discovered the medication discrepancy.

When he threatened to expose them, Julian arranged his death.

Vanessa claimed she did not approve.

Adrian listened to her statement from behind one-way glass.

She cried.

She insisted she still loved him once.

She said Julian manipulated her.

She said she only wanted security.

Then investigators asked about the staircase.

Vanessa had no answer.

Finally she whispered:

“I panicked.”

That sentence ended whatever sympathy Adrian might have had.

Emma waited outside the police station.

Adrian was surprised.

“I thought you'd left.”

“I almost did.”

“Why didn't you?”

She looked exhausted.

“Because you shouldn't hear about your doctor's death alone.”

Adrian nodded.

“Thank you.”

They stood silently.

Then Emma asked:

“What happens now?”

“Vanessa and Julian are being charged.”

“I mean with you.”

Adrian looked at her.

She continued.

“You told me you trusted me.”

“I do.”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“You trust what I proved.”

Adrian frowned.

“Isn't that the same thing?”

“No.”

Emma stepped closer.

“Trust is what you give before somebody passes an exam.”

He understood.

The wheelchair.

The lies.

The months of pretending.

He had spent so much time trapping his enemies that he had begun treating everyone like a suspect.

Even her.

“You're right.”

Emma seemed surprised.

Adrian continued.

“I don't know how to fix that.”

“You can't fix it tonight.”

“I know.”

She nodded.

“Good.”

Emma handed him something.

Her house keys.

Adrian recognized them.

“You're leaving.”

“Yes.”

His expression fell.

“I don't want money.”

“I wasn't going to offer it.”

“Good.”

“I was going to ask whether there's any chance you'll come back.”

Emma looked at him.

“As your maid?”

“No.”

That answer came immediately.

Emma's expression softened slightly.

“Then don't ask yet.”

She walked away.

Adrian watched her go.

Months earlier, Vanessa left because she believed he was broken.

Now Emma was leaving because she refused to let him treat her as something that needed testing.

The difference was painful.

And important.
