Chapter 5 - No Wheelchair Between Them

Julian Pierce was convicted on charges connected to conspiracy, fraud, attempted murder, and Marcus Hale's death.
Vanessa accepted a plea agreement after providing evidence about the financial scheme.
Adrian testified.
Then he stopped discussing her publicly.
Blackwood Holdings survived.
The fraudulent incapacity documents were voided.
Adrian created independent safeguards preventing any romantic partner or family member from automatically controlling the company during a medical emergency.
He also made another decision.
He sold the mansion.
Thomas was shocked.
“You grew up there.”
“I almost died there twice.”
“Fair point.”
The wheelchair was donated to a rehabilitation charity.
The plaid blanket went with it.
Adrian kept nothing from the deception.
Except one photograph.
Security footage had captured Emma pulling the wheelchair away from the stairs.
Not because he wanted to romanticize the moment.
Because it reminded him of something uncomfortable.
She had acted before knowing there was anything to gain.
That was trust.
Six months passed before Adrian contacted her.
One message.
Coffee? No explanations. No tests. You can say no.
Emma replied the following morning.
One coffee.
They met at a small café.
Adrian arrived without a driver.
Emma noticed immediately.
“You're walking.”
He smiled.
“I've been practicing.”
“Very impressive.”
“You sound unconvinced.”
“I watched you stand up dramatically at a gala. The surprise is gone.”
He laughed.
It was the first easy laugh they'd shared.
They started again.
Slowly.
Emma never returned to work for him.
She enrolled in nursing school, something she had postponed for years while supporting her younger sister.
Adrian quietly offered tuition once.
Emma refused.
He never offered again.
That mattered more than the offer.
They dated.
They argued.
Sometimes Adrian became suspicious without reason.
Emma called him out immediately.
Sometimes Emma assumed his silence meant manipulation.
He learned to explain instead of test.
A year after the night at the staircase, Blackwood Holdings held another charity gala.
Adrian almost declined.
Emma persuaded him to attend.
They arrived together.
When they reached the same staircase platform, Emma stopped.
Adrian looked at her.
“Bad memories?”
She pointed toward the stairs.
“Don't make me save you again.”
He smiled.
“I'll try to behave.”
They entered the ballroom.
Halfway through dinner, Adrian stood.
Emma narrowed her eyes.
“What are you doing?”
“No dramatic stunt.”
“That sounds exactly like what someone planning a dramatic stunt would say.”
Adrian laughed.
Then took a small box from his pocket.
Emma stared at it.
“Adrian.”
He did not kneel.
Not yet.
“I spent years thinking love was something people had to prove to me.”
Her expression softened.
“I was wrong.”
“Yes.”
He smiled.
“You could've let me finish.”
“I've heard the speech developing for months.”
He opened the box.
A simple ring.
“No conditions.”
Emma looked at him.
“No tests?”
“Never.”
“No hidden cameras?”
“Absolutely not.”
“No fake paralysis?”
“I think I've retired that one permanently.”
She laughed.
Then became serious.
Adrian held out the ring.
“Will you marry me?”
Emma looked toward the staircase.
Then toward him.
“Yes.”
He exhaled as if he had been holding his breath for an entire year.
Emma extended her hand.
After he placed the ring on her finger, she whispered:
“One thing.”
“What?”
“If you ever fake being unable to walk again…”
Adrian raised an eyebrow.
“Yes?”
She smiled.
“I'll push the empty wheelchair down the stairs myself.”
He laughed so loudly several guests turned.
And for the first time, that staircase no longer belonged to Vanessa.
May you like
It belonged to the moment Adrian finally understood the difference between someone staying because they wanted his fortune—
and someone walking away because they demanded his honesty.
