Chapter 12 - THE FIRST DANCE

The police sirens wailed in the distance, a familiar soundtrack to the end of a nightmare.
Daniel had already tied up Silas and the surviving thugs. Luca walked over to Arthur, who was sitting on the dirt, clutching his chest, breathing heavily.
Luca knelt beside the old man.
For a long moment, the mafia boss and the bus driver just looked at each other.
"You saved her," Luca said quietly, looking at me.
"I promised," Arthur whispered, managing a weak smile. "Protect... the family."
Luca reached out and gripped Arthur’s hand, hauling him gently to his feet. "You are family, Arthur. I am sorry I ever doubted you."
Arthur patted Luca’s cheek with a trembling hand. "Forgiven."
I ran over and threw my arms around Arthur, crying into his oversized suit. He smelled like peppermint and old wool, and he felt exactly like a father.
One month later.
The string quartet played a soft, beautiful melody as the sun set over the gardens of the Moretti estate.
Fairy lights twinkled in the trees. The air smelled of jasmine and expensive champagne.
It was a small wedding. No corrupt politicians. No mafia bosses. Just the people who actually loved us.
Margaret, the retired social worker, sat in the front row wiping her eyes. My mother, looking radiant in a lavender dress, sat beside her.
I stood at the end of the white silk runner, wearing a simple, elegant lace gown.
At the altar, Luca stood waiting for me. He wore a perfectly tailored black tuxedo. He looked breathtaking, his dark eyes fixed entirely on me, filled with absolute devotion.
Standing next to him, wearing a tiny matching tuxedo and holding the rings on a velvet pillow, was Leo.
I took a deep breath.
"Ready, sweetheart?" a gentle voice asked beside me.
I looked to my right.
Arthur Bellini stood there. He was wearing a brand new, custom-made charcoal suit. His posture was straight, his silver hair neatly combed.
"I'm ready," I smiled, linking my arm through his.
Arthur patted my hand.
We walked down the aisle together. He didn't stumble. He didn't rush. He walked with the pride of a man who had fought through hell to earn his place in the light.
When we reached the altar, Arthur kissed my cheek.
He looked at Luca, placing my hand in his.
"Take care... of our girl," Arthur said clearly.
"With my life," Luca promised.
The ceremony was short, sweet, and perfect. When Luca finally kissed me, the small crowd erupted into cheers. Leo threw a handful of rose petals into the air, laughing as they rained down on us.
Later that evening, the reception was in full swing under the white tent on the lawn.
I had danced with Luca until my feet hurt. I had danced with little Leo, who proudly showed off his Batman socks under his tuxedo pants.
As the band slowed their tempo, playing a soft, jazzy ballad, I walked over to the edge of the dance floor.
Arthur was sitting at a table, sipping a glass of water, watching the celebration with a contented smile.
I walked up to him and held out my hand.
"Mr. Bellini," I smiled. "I believe you promised a certain girl a dance at her wedding."
Arthur looked at my outstretched hand. His eyes filled with tears.
He remembered the yellow therapy sheet. Walk Vanessa down aisle. Dance with my little girl.
Vanessa had chosen a prison cell. But Arthur had gained a daughter anyway.
Arthur slowly stood up. He didn't reach for his cane.
He took my hand, and he led me onto the dance floor.
We danced slowly, swaying to the music under the twinkling lights. He stepped on my toes once, but we both just laughed.
Luca stood on the edge of the floor, holding a sleepy Leo in his arms, watching us with a smile that could have lit up the entire city.
I rested my head against Arthur’s shoulder. The ghosts of the past were gone. The fires were extinguished. The secrets were buried.
I was no longer just a housemaid struggling to survive.
May you like
I was Hannah Moretti. I was a mother to a brave little boy. I was a wife to a man who would burn the world down to keep me warm.
And as Arthur spun me gently under the stars, I knew I was finally, truly home.
