Chapter 8 - THE HOSPITAL AND THE HEIRLOOM

The sirens echoed through the Wisconsin woods like a choir of angels.
Within minutes, federal agents and local police swarmed the lodge. Marcus was dead in the snow. Vanessa was dragged away in handcuffs, screaming threats that nobody listened to. Richard’s body was covered with a white sheet.
I sat in the back of an ambulance, watching the paramedics carefully wrap Arthur’s ribs. He had broken two of them in the tackle, but he was stubbornly refusing pain medication because he wanted to stay awake.
Luca stood beside the ambulance doors, speaking quietly with a silver-haired FBI agent. He handed over the briefcase. The agent nodded, shook Luca’s hand, and walked away.
Luca turned and climbed into the back of the ambulance, sitting on the bench opposite me and Arthur. He looked exhausted, his white shirt ruined, soot and blood on his hands.
But when he looked at me, his eyes were incredibly soft.
"It's done," Luca said gently. "The federal prosecutor is filing charges. The insurance fraud ring is dismantled. Your father's name is cleared, Hannah."
I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for eighteen months. I pulled my father’s pocket watch from my apron and held it to my chest, closing my eyes. We got them, Dad.
Luca leaned forward and rested his hand on Arthur’s knee.
"You saved my life, Arthur," Luca said, his voice thick with emotion. "You saved Hannah's life. You are the bravest man I have ever known."
Arthur smiled weakly. "Did what... I had to."
"Why did you follow us?" I asked, wiping tears from my face. "Daniel took you to the safe house. You should have stayed with Leo."
Arthur reached into his suit jacket. His hands were shaking, but not from the stroke. They were shaking from adrenaline. He pulled out a small, child's drawing.
It was a drawing of a superhero in a Batman shirt, holding hands with an old man in a gray suit.
"Leo... was crying," Arthur whispered. "Said... bad men... hurt people. Couldn't let... bad men... hurt you."
He looked at Luca. "You gave me... my grandson. Owed you... my life."
Luca shook his head, his eyes shining with unshed tears. "You don't owe me anything, Arthur. You are family now. You and Leo."
The paramedic closed the ambulance doors. "We're heading to Chicago General to get him X-rayed. You folks can follow in your car."
Luca helped me out of the ambulance. We stood in the damp, freezing fog as the red lights faded down the mountain road.
Daniel pulled the armored SUV around.
"To the hospital, Boss?" Daniel asked.
"No," Luca said, opening the passenger door for me. "To the safe house. I want to see my son."
I looked at him in surprise. "Your son?"
Luca paused, his hand on the door frame. He looked at me, a deep, vulnerable truth hiding in his eyes.
"Leo isn't Marcus's son," Luca said quietly.
My jaw dropped.
"Vanessa and I... we were together briefly, eight years ago," Luca confessed, the pain evident in his voice. "Before I built the legitimate business. Before I had money. She left me because I refused to enter the syndicate. I never knew she was pregnant."
"Marcus lied at the dinner?" I asked, piecing it together.
"Marcus found out about the boy years later," Luca explained. "He used Leo to blackmail Vanessa into helping him steal from my company. He told her if she didn't help him frame me for the arson, he would tell me about my son, and I would take him away from her."
"But she abandoned him," I whispered in horror.
"She sent him to a boarding school under a fake name to keep him hidden from me," Luca said, his jaw tightening. "Arthur found out. That's why Arthur came to the dinner tonight. He didn't come to walk her down the aisle. He came to tell me the truth about my boy."
Tears filled my eyes. Arthur hadn't been practicing a speech to beg for his daughter's love. He had been practicing a speech to save his grandson.
"Let's go get him," I said, grabbing Luca’s hand.
When we arrived at the safe house—a quiet, heavily fortified brownstone in the suburbs—the sun was just beginning to rise.
We walked inside.
Leo was asleep on the living room sofa, clutching his teddy bear.
Luca walked over and knelt beside the couch. He reached out with a trembling hand and gently stroked the little boy's dark hair.
Leo stirred. He opened his big, dark eyes—eyes that looked exactly like Luca's.
"Are you the boss?" Leo asked sleepily.
Luca smiled, a tear finally slipping down his cheek. "I am. But you can call me Dad."
Leo sat up, rubbing his eyes. "Where is Grandpa?"
"Grandpa is at the doctor," I said, sitting on the edge of the coffee table. "He hurt his ribs fighting a dragon to keep you safe. But he's going to be just fine."
Leo smiled, hugging his bear. "Grandpa is strong."
"He's the strongest man I know," Luca agreed.
Luca looked up at me. The morning light caught his face, erasing the shadows of the mafia boss and revealing the man underneath. A father. A protector.
"Hannah," Luca said softly. "I know I have no right to ask this of you. After everything you've been through tonight. But... I don't want you to leave. I want you to stay with us. With me."

I looked at this terrifying, powerful man who had shielded me from bullets and fire, who looked at his newly discovered son with such profound love.
"I'm not going anywhere, Luca," I smiled.
