Chapter 9 - THE ASHES OF THE BENNETT EMPIRE

Morning sunlight cut through the shattered stained-glass windows of the Moretti mansion, casting fractured rainbows across the blood-stained marble floors.

The gala had vanished.

In its place were federal investigators, forensic teams, and rows of black transport vans idling in the courtyard.

I sat on a velvet sofa in the grand parlor, wrapped in one of Dante’s heavy wool coats, holding a steaming mug of black coffee.

The news channels on the muted television mounted on the wall flashed breaking headlines:

*PHARMACEUTICAL GIANT RICHARD BENNETT ARRESTED IN MASSIVE RACKETEERING AND CORRUPTION SCANDAL.*

*MORETTI SYNDICATE ASSISTS FEDERAL AUTHORITIES IN DISMANTLING WHITE-COLLAR CRIME RING.*

Vanessa Bennett’s tear-streaked face flashed across the screen as federal agents led her away in handcuffs, screaming obscenities at the camera lenses.

My uncle Arthur was already in transit to a federal penitentiary.

The empire that had stolen my family’s name, my father’s life, and my youth had collapsed in a single night.

Footsteps echoed across the marble.

Dante walked in, wearing a fresh charcoal suit, his shirt collar open, looking every bit the ruthless syndicate boss he was.

He handed me a manila folder.

“What’s this?” I asked, looking up at him.

“The patents,” Dante said simply, sitting down beside me on the sofa. “Recovered from an offshore server in the Cayman Islands. They legally belong to the Carter Estate now. With the Bennett patents nullified by federal fraud charges, your mother’s medical foundation is fully funded, retroactive to six years ago.”

My hands shook as I opened the folder.

Pages of legal documents, signatures, and transfer deeds stared back at me.

It wasn't a dream.

It was real.

“I don't know how to thank you,” I whispered, a fresh wave of tears blurring the ink.

“Don't thank me,” Dante replied, his voice softening as he reached over and brushed a strand of hair behind my ear. “Thank your father. He built something worth fighting for.”

I set the folder down and turned to face him fully.

“What happens now, Dante? You dismantled the board. You exposed the corruption. What happens to the Moretti syndicate?”

Dante let out a low, humorless chuckle.

“We legitimate our holdings, Elena. Shift our assets into medical research, real estate, and lawful shipping. The old ways are dead.”

He leaned closer, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my breath hitch.

“And as for me... I’m stepping down from active operations.”

My eyes widened.

“Stepping down?”

“A boss needs a queen, Elena. Not a maid.”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box.

He opened it.

Inside rested a ring—not the flashy diamond Vanessa had worn, but a delicate platinum band set with a single, brilliant sapphire that caught the morning light.

“I didn't buy this for a public merger,” Dante murmured, his voice thick with emotion. “I bought it six months ago, waiting for the right moment to ask.”

I stared at the ring, my heart hammering against my ribs.

May you like

“Dante...”

“Will you stay in this house, Elena?” he asked, taking my hand in his. “Not as staff. Not as a guest. As my wife.”
