The great hall erupted.
Mason stared at Adrian. “You were supposed to be my brother.”
Adrian’s expression hardened. “I was.”
Mason looked away first.
Vanessa stepped forward. “You cannot hand me to the police. You know what our families will do.”
“Your family has already received the evidence.”
Fear finally entered her face. “The engagement—”
“Never existed in any way that mattered.”
“You loved me.”
“I loved the person you pretended to be.”
Her face twisted. “And now you love the maid?”
The hall fell silent. Adrian did not glance away. “Grace has more honor in one hand than you have carried in your entire life.”
Vanessa was formally arrested for attempted murder, conspiracy, kidnapping, evidence tampering, and financial fraud. The evidence was strong enough that no family influence could make it disappear. Mason and the armed conspirators were also transferred to federal and state authorities after Adrian’s attorneys delivered records connecting them to the harbor ambush and the kidnapping operation.
Some of Adrian’s captains objected. They expected the old rules of revenge.
Adrian refused. “For generations, men in this house have answered betrayal with more blood,” he said. “All it created was another generation waiting to settle the debt. It ends here. They will face trial in daylight, where every lie can be heard.”
It was the first major decision Adrian made after almost dying. It was not the last.

Over the following months, he began separating the Vale organization from the criminal world that had created it. Illegal shipping routes were closed. Extortion operations were dismantled. Legitimate companies were placed under independent management. Men who refused the change were paid what they were owed and ordered to leave Port Lawson.
It cost Adrian money. It cost him influence. It nearly started a war. But the evidence against Vanessa, Mason, and their outside partners gave him enough leverage to force a peace.
