Chapter 15

Then he knelt and opened a small box. “I cannot promise you a life without danger or mistakes. But I can promise that you will never stand beneath me, behind me, or in my debt. You will stand beside me, and every decision that shapes our family will belong to both of us.”

Grace looked at the man before her. He was still feared in Port Lawson. He still carried scars, secrets, and the consequences of a life he could not erase. But he was also the man who had waited beside her hospital bed, encouraged her education, and chosen justice when revenge would have been easier. Most importantly, he had never asked her to become smaller so he could remain powerful.

“Yes,” she whispered.

Lily threw rose petals before Adrian had even placed the ring on Grace’s finger.

That evening, after dinner, Lily slipped out of her bedroom and padded barefoot down the hall. She climbed onto Adrian and Grace’s bed and placed both hands against Adrian’s cheeks.

He opened one eye. “What is it?”

She leaned close and sniffed.

Grace laughed into her pillow.

Lily considered him carefully. “You don’t smell wrong anymore.”

Adrian pulled her beneath the blanket between them. “That’s because I have two people making sure I don’t.”

Lily hugged him.

Grace watched them in the soft morning light. A year earlier, her daughter had been the smallest person in a room filled with powerful adults. Every one of them had tried to silence her. But Lily had remained in her chair. She had trusted what she sensed. She had saved Adrian, exposed a conspiracy, rescued an innocent doctor, and forced a man raised by violence to reconsider what strength truly meant.
