Chapter 3 - THE EIGHTY-TWO-MILLION-DOLLAR SECRET

Everett slowly closed the refinancing folder.

“Callum.”

Callum looked toward the windows.

Fifth Avenue glittered below.

When he finally spoke, his voice was barely audible.

“It was supposed to be temporary.”

Meredith went cold.

“How much?”

No answer.

Everett spoke.

“How much did you borrow from Harrison Ashford?”

Callum rubbed one hand over his face.

“Eighty-two.”

The number did not feel like money.

“Million?”

Meredith asked.

“Yes.”

For several seconds she could hear only her own pulse.

Everett opened the black folder again.

“What collateral?”

“The Newark distribution portfolio.”

“Two Jersey City properties.”

“Temporary security.”

“Temporary?”

Meredith repeated.

Callum sat.

“The Manhattan project was bleeding cash.”

“How much?”

“Forty-seven million so far.”

Everett swore softly.

Meredith pressed one hand against her belly.

“So you borrowed eighty-two million dollars from Belle’s father.”

“Yes.”

“Pledged operating assets.”

“Yes.”

“Without full board disclosure.”

Callum looked away.

“Yes.”

Belle stepped beside him.

“He was trying to protect the company.”

Meredith turned.

“No.”

“He was trying to protect himself from looking like he failed.”

Callum’s head snapped up.

“That is not fair.”

“Fair?”

Her voice broke.

She steadied it.

“You removed me from the advisory committees because you said you were worried about my pregnancy.”

“I was worried.”

“You were hiding the debt.”

Callum said nothing.

The silence hurt more than denial.

Meredith remembered the nursery.

Callum standing behind her while she folded blankets.

Kissing the back of her neck.

“You’ve done enough for everybody.”

he whispered.

“Let me take care of things now.”

She had cried because she thought she was finally being cared for.

Now she saw the other truth.

If Meredith stayed out of financial review, she would not see what Callum had done.

Everett turned.

“I need every Ashford document.”

“They’re at the office.”

“Every document.”

Callum nodded.

Belle interrupted.

“There is no reason to panic.”

“Harrison structured the bridge to give Callum time.”

Meredith looked at her.

“How much time?”

Belle blinked.

“What?”

“You seem familiar with the structure.”

“How much time?”

Callum answered.

“Ninety days.”

“When does it expire?”

Silence.

Everett’s face changed.

“Callum.”

“Friday.”

It was Wednesday night.

Less than forty-eight hours.

“What happens Friday?”

Everett asked.

Callum reached for water but did not drink.

“If refinancing isn’t completed, Ashford can begin covenant review.”

“And?”

“If ratios fail, they can demand additional collateral.”

“How much?”

Meredith asked.

“Enough.”

“That is not an answer.”

Callum looked at her.

“Enough to put Newark at risk.”

Newark employed eighteen hundred people.

Drivers.

Warehouse workers.

Dispatchers.

Mechanics.

Managers.

Families whose mortgages had nothing to do with Callum’s pride or Belle’s father.

Meredith’s anger changed shape.

This was no longer only her marriage.

Everett looked at Belle.

“What does Harrison receive under the amendment?”

“A short extension.”

“In exchange for what?”

Belle said nothing.

Callum reached toward the black folder.

Meredith saw the movement.

“No.”

He stopped.

“There is another document.”

she said.

Callum’s eyes betrayed him.

Everett looked furious.

“You brought it here.”

Callum opened his briefcase.

Second folder.

“I was supposed to sign tonight.”

The anniversary.

Belle in Meredith’s chair.

Montblanc pen.

The whole evening built around signature.

Everett read quickly.

His expression hardened.

“This is not a simple extension.”

“I know.”

“Then why are you signing it?”

“Because without it, lender review begins Friday.”

“It should have begun months ago.”

Callum’s anger returned.

“You think I don’t know that?”

“Then stop making the next mistake because you’re afraid to admit the first one.”

For one second, he looked like the man Meredith remembered.

Tired.

Scared.

Human.

Then Belle touched his arm.

“My father is giving you a way out.”

Callum looked at Belle.

Then Meredith.

Then the papers.

“Please.”

Meredith said.

It was the first thing she had asked from him all night.

May you like

“Do not sign until we know who benefits.”

Callum’s fingers closed around the pen.
