Chapter 6 - THE EVIDENCE THEY KEPT FROM ME

Back in Alpine, Naomi called Meredith.

“I need to see you.”

“You had plenty of time to speak last night.”

“I know.”

“You told everyone I had been out of the business too long.”

“I was trying to stop you from saying more.”

“That’s supposed to make me trust you?”

“No.”

Naomi sounded tired.

“It’s supposed to make you angry enough to listen.”

Meredith paused.

“Why would you protect me?”

“Because six months ago, I tried to warn Callum.”

Meredith went still.

“About what?”

“Graham.”

The name landed heavily.

Naomi continued.

“I found unusual approvals.”

“Graham appeared in deals he had no reason to touch.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because two days after I raised it, somebody filed a complaint accusing me of misusing confidential data.”

Meredith understood.

The same accusation that nearly became hers last night.

Naomi’s voice broke.

“I got scared.”

For years, Meredith thought Naomi stopped respecting her.

Maybe fear had hidden beneath the distance.

“I kept one compliance archive I was authorized to retain.”

“What’s in it?”

“Emails.”

“Review delays.”

“Meeting approvals.”

“Payment timing.”

“Enough to show Graham was involved before Belle became close to Callum.”

“Send it to Everett.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“One document carries Everett’s approval.”

Meredith stopped breathing.

“If I’m reading it correctly, he knew something was wrong months ago.”

Meredith stared through the bedroom window at gray morning.

She was tired of every person knowing one piece and deciding she did not deserve it.

“What exactly did Everett approve?”

“A review waiver.”

“How much?”

“Four point two million.”

“When?”

“Five months ago.”

Before Belle became obvious.

Before Meredith’s committee access disappeared.

Before anyone acknowledged a crisis.

“Send me the page.”

“I already did.”

Everett’s digital approval sat at the bottom.

Meredith called.

He answered on the second ring.

“I have a document with your name.”

Silence.

“You knew.”

“I knew something was wrong.”

“How long?”

“Five months.”

“You watched me sit at that table while people questioned whether I obtained information illegally.”

“I was trying to protect the integrity of your evidence.”

“You let Callum sign the amendment.”

“I advised against it.”

“You let transactions continue.”

Everett exhaled.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because stopping the first suspicious transaction would have told whoever was behind it that we were watching.”

Meredith’s anger sharpened.

“So you used company money as bait.”

“I allowed limited transactions to proceed while outside counsel traced beneficial ownership.”

“Without board disclosure.”

“The board included people I did not trust.”

“Graham.”

“I suspected him.”

“Suspected.”

“I had patterns.”

“Not proof.”

Meredith closed her eyes.

“You gambled with employee jobs.”

“I thought we had more time.”

The answer was not defensive.

That frightened her more.

Everett sounded like a man who knew he had made a mistake.

“What changed?”

“Manhattan losses accelerated.”

“Then Callum took Harrison’s bridge loan without routing it through me.”

“So he broke whatever control you thought you had.”

“Yes.”

“And Belle?”

“I knew she was entering too many financial meetings.”

“I did not know the affair until later.”

A tightening moved across Meredith’s abdomen.

She stopped.

Breathed.

It faded.

Stress.

Probably.

“Do you have anything that proves Graham’s intent?”

“Not enough.”

“Naomi says she has emails.”

“Then preserve correctly.”

“Do not forward widely.”

“Do not print unnecessary copies.”

“Do not send anything to Callum’s office.”

“Why?”

“If Graham monitors internal communications, we cannot assume Callum’s office is secure.”

Another phone rang at Everett’s side.

He muttered.

Then:

“Meredith.”

“What?”

“A covenant-breach notice just arrived.”

Her heart kicked.

“Already?”

“Harrison accelerated review.”

“That was Friday.”

“It is Thursday morning.”

“I know.”

“How long?”

“Twelve hours.”

Meredith sat.

“What happens after twelve?”

“They can demand additional collateral, notify participating lenders, and begin a process that could put Newark operating assets under serious pressure.”

Eighteen hundred people.

Meredith looked toward the nursery.

“No.”

Everett misunderstood.

“What?”

“We’re not letting that happen.”

“Meredith, you are thirty-four weeks pregnant.”

“I am aware.”

“Stay out of the office.”

“Then bring the office to me.”
