Chapter 1

Chapter 1

I walked into the district court carrying secret audit files when a uniformed cop threatened to throw me in jail for holding my briefcase. But the moment he demanded my recorded evidence, the judge ordered court deputies to disarm him on the spot!

"Step back, lady! Hand over that briefcase right now, or you’re leaving here in handcuffs!"

The heavy steel doors of the 4th District Courthouse had barely swung shut behind me when Officer Vance backed me against the cold marble wall, his hand resting menacingly on his service weapon. My heart hammered against my ribs, but I forced my posture straight and clutched my heavy leather briefcase tighter against my chest. My name is Elena Brooks, an independent compliance investigator, and inside this locked bag were months of painstaking research detailing systemic corruption, missing evidence, and altered police records within this very department. I was supposed to deliver it directly to the presiding judge, but Vance was standing squarely between me and justice.

"On what legal authority are you detaining me?" I asked, keeping my voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through my veins. "I’m on official court business."

Vance’s face darkened, his nostrils flaring with unbridled rage. "You’re obstructing an active officer! You don’t ask questions here, Brooks. Give me the bag or I’ll drag you down to central booking for felony obstruction!"

"I am not giving you anything without a warrant or a direct judicial order," I replied, taking a cautious step back.

Instead of answering, Vance lunged forward. His heavy hand clamped down on my wrist with crushing force, twisting my arm back as he reached for his steel cuffs. "You made a big mistake, lady!" he snarled in my ear, his breath hot against my neck.

"What in God's name is going on out here?" a commanding, authoritative voice echoed down the hallway.

I looked up to see Judge Evelyn Carter standing at the threshold of Courtroom 3B, her dark judicial robes billowing as her sharp, piercing eyes locked onto Vance’s hands, which were currently pinning me against the granite column. The entire hallway went deathly silent. Vance froze, his fingers hovering over his restraint belt, but he didn't let go of my wrist.

"Judge Carter," Vance stammered, trying to maintain a tough facade while subtly trying to snatch the briefcase from my fingers. "This woman is trespassing with restricted police materials. I'm securing the evidence."

"That is a lie, Your Honor," I snapped, wrenching my arm free as Judge Carter marched down the corridor toward us.

Vance physically stepped into her path, his hand unclipping his taser holster as his eyes flashed with desperate panic. "Your Honor, stay back! You don't know what she's carrying! This briefcase contains restricted, hazardous police property that hasn't been cleared by forensics! I am confiscating it under active threat protocol!"

Officer Vance thought he could intimidate me into silence right in front of the judge, but he had no idea what was actually hidden inside my briefcase—or who was pulling his strings from the shadows.

PART 2: The hallway seemed to shrink as Judge Carter approached, her eyes never leaving Officer Vance. “Remove your hand from that woman,” she ordered, her voice calm but unmistakably firm. Vance hesitated, then slowly stepped away from me. For the first time, I saw uncertainty flicker across his face.

“Your Honor, you don’t understand what she has,” Vance insisted. “Those files are evidence belonging to the department.” Judge Carter looked directly at me. “Ms. Brooks, are those materials intended for this court?” I nodded and answered, “Yes, Your Honor. They were delivered under a sealed request.”

Vance immediately reached toward my briefcase again. “Then I need to inspect them.” Judge Carter’s expression hardened. “No, Officer. You will not inspect anything unless this court orders it.” Vance swallowed, but his hand remained suspiciously close to his equipment belt.

I opened the briefcase only after Judge Carter instructed me to do so. Inside were audit reports, photographs, encrypted drives, and copies of police records with dates that didn’t match the department’s official files. Judge Carter carefully examined the first folder. Her face changed when she recognized several case numbers.

“These records were altered,” she said quietly. “That is impossible,” Vance replied too quickly. I pulled out another document and placed it on the table. “The originals were deleted from the department database three months ago.”

Judge Carter looked at me sharply. “How did you obtain these?” I took a breath before answering. “Because someone inside the department contacted me anonymously.” Vance suddenly stepped forward. “This is ridiculous. She’s fabricating evidence.”

Then my phone vibrated inside my coat. I checked the screen and saw a message from an unknown number. It contained only three words: **“He knows everything.”** My stomach dropped as I looked toward Vance.
