Chapter 6

Now, as the heavy brass latches clicked shut for the final time, it felt remarkably light in my hands. The truth had finally been delivered to the hands of justice, surviving intimidation, an arson fire, and an empire of deceit.
Judge Carter placed a warm, reassuring hand on my shoulder, her sharp eyes softening with deep, genuine gratitude. "Ms. Brooks, this city owes you a debt that can never truly be repaid by ordinary professional fees."
"I only did the job I was sworn to do, Your Honor," I replied, feeling a faint, weary smile cross my face. "An audit is meant to protect the integrity of the law, no matter how high the rot reaches."
"You did far more than an audit, Elena," Mercer said, extending his calloused hand toward me with immense respect. "You brought a ghost back to life, and you gave meaning to six long years of hiding in the dark."
I shook Captain Mercer's hand firmly, feeling the strength of an investigator who had endured unimaginable trials to see this day. "What will you do now, Captain? The whole department will need to be rebuilt from the foundation up."
Mercer looked toward the open courtroom doors, where afternoon sunlight was beginning to filter brightly through the high arched windows. The dark shadows of corruption that had plagued the Fourth District were finally dissolving under the warm, honest daylight.
"I think I’m ready to come home," Mercer said with a quiet, profound peace settling across his weathered face. "There are a lot of wrongful convictions to overturn, and I intend to help Evelyn review every single file."

We walked out of Courtroom 3B together, our footsteps echoing softly across the grand, historic rotunda of the Fourth District Courthouse. Outside, reporters and citizens were already gathering on the stone steps, sensing the monumental dawn of real justice.
The heavy briefcase remained securely at my side, no longer a dangerous secret, but an enduring monument to absolute accountability. The law had bent under pressure, but through relentless courage and unwavering truth, it had ultimately refused to break.
