Chapter 2 - GABRIEL'S SON, NOT DOMINIC'S

Dominic Moretti did not answer immediately.

For perhaps ten seconds, no one in the hospital room moved.

Outside the window, Chicago looked strangely peaceful beneath a pale afternoon sky. Cars moved along the street far below. Somewhere down the hallway, a nurse laughed softly. A cart rattled over the polished floor.

Ordinary sounds.

Ordinary life.

Yet Elena felt as though she had stepped into a different version of her own world.

Luca slept in the bassinet beside her bed, one tiny fist tucked beneath his chin.

On his wrist gleamed the gold Moretti bracelet.

The same bracelet worn by Valentina's child.

Elena looked from her son to her husband.

"What did you promise her?"

Dominic closed the hospital-room door behind him.

He nodded toward the two men who had entered with him.

"Wait outside."

They left without a word.

Dominic remained near the door.

For the first time in six years, Elena noticed that he seemed uncertain about approaching her.

The Dominic Moretti she knew never hesitated.

Not at business meetings.

Not at family dinners.

Not when people twice his age waited for his decision before daring to speak.

But now his hands hung motionless at his sides.

Valentina stood near the window, her face tense.

Finally Dominic said, "I promised her son would be recognized as a Moretti."

Elena stared at him.

"So he is yours."

Dominic drew a slow breath.

"Legally and publicly, I intended to recognize him as mine."

"That isn't what I asked."

His eyes met hers.

"No."

One word.

Elena blinked.

Valentina turned toward him.

"Dominic."

"No more half-truths," he said quietly.

Elena gripped the blanket covering her legs.

"What does 'no' mean?"

"It means Matteo isn't my biological son."

The room seemed to shift again.

Elena looked at Valentina.

Valentina's expression contained no surprise.

Only exhaustion.

"You told me your baby was Dominic's," Elena said.

"No." Valentina's voice trembled. "You asked if he was Dominic's. I couldn't answer."

"You said you'd been sleeping with my husband longer than I thought."

Valentina lowered her eyes.

"I said what I knew would make Dominic finally tell you something."

Dominic's jaw tightened.

"That was reckless."

She turned sharply.

"And hiding this from her for a year wasn't?"

"Stop."

"No," Elena said.

Both of them looked at her.

Her voice was quiet now.

That frightened Dominic more than anger would have.

"Nobody tells anyone to stop except me."

Dominic said nothing.

Elena pointed toward a chair.

"Sit."

He obeyed.

She turned toward Valentina.

"You too."

Valentina sat by the window.

Elena looked at the two people who had apparently shared a secret inside her marriage.

"Start at the beginning."

Dominic rubbed one hand over his face.

"Matteo's father was my younger brother."

Elena stared at him.

"Gabriel?"

Dominic nodded.

The name brought with it an unexpected rush of memories.

Gabriel Moretti had been everything Dominic was not.

Where Dominic entered rooms quietly and somehow controlled them, Gabriel arrived laughing.

He loved terrible jokes, fast cars, old jazz records, and cooking elaborate meals nobody had requested.

Three years younger than Dominic, Gabriel had worked in the legal side of the Moretti companies. He had spent years trying to persuade his older brother that the family could survive without depending forever on fear and secrecy.

Elena had liked him.

Everyone had.

Then, eleven months earlier, Gabriel had died in what the family called a highway accident while traveling outside Chicago.

Elena remembered Dominic receiving the call.

She had been three months pregnant.

He had stood in their kitchen holding his phone, completely still.

Then he had disappeared into his study until morning.

At Gabriel's funeral, Valentina had stood several rows behind the family.

Elena had assumed she was there because of business.

Now she understood.

"Gabriel and Valentina?" Elena whispered.

Valentina nodded.

"For almost two years."

Elena turned toward Dominic.

"You knew?"

"Not at first."

"When did you find out?"

"After Gabriel died."

Valentina clasped her hands tightly.

"Gabriel wanted to tell everyone. I kept asking him to wait."

"Why?"

Her eyes flickered toward Dominic.

"Because being connected to this family changes your life."

Dominic said nothing.

Valentina continued.

"My father worked with the Moretti companies years ago. I grew up knowing what the name meant. Gabriel kept saying things were changing, that Dominic was moving businesses into legitimate industries."

"He was," Elena said.

"He was trying," Valentina replied gently. "But Gabriel knew there were still people who believed the old ways were the only ways."

Elena glanced at Luca.

"And you were pregnant."

"I found out two weeks before Gabriel died."

A lump formed in Elena's throat.

"Did he know?"

Valentina smiled sadly.

"Yes."

She reached into her handbag and removed a folded sheet of paper.

"I told him over breakfast."

She unfolded it carefully.

Inside was a restaurant receipt.

On the back, in blue ink, was a short handwritten note.

Elena recognized Gabriel's messy handwriting.

BEST NEWS OF MY LIFE. TELL DOM I FINALLY WON SOMETHING.

For a moment, Elena could almost hear Gabriel laughing.

She looked at Dominic.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

His answer came slowly.

"Because Gabriel's death wasn't as simple as everyone believed."

The tenderness Elena had begun to feel vanished beneath fresh suspicion.

"What does that mean?"

"The police report was accurate about the accident. But Gabriel had been investigating financial records before he died."

"What records?"

"Money disappearing from one of our shipping divisions."

Elena's gaze narrowed.

"Someone was stealing from you?"

"Not exactly."

Dominic leaned forward.

"Someone had been moving money through several shell companies tied to people my father worked with years ago. Gabriel believed they were trying to keep parts of the old organization alive without my knowledge."

"And you think those people caused his accident?"

"No."

The immediate answer surprised her.

Dominic shook his head.

"I don't know. And I refused to tell myself I knew something I couldn't prove."

That sounded more like the husband Elena had once trusted.

Careful.

Controlled.

Never accusing without certainty.

"Then why hide Matteo?"

"Because Gabriel left documents."

Dominic glanced at Valentina.

"And instructions."

Valentina opened her handbag again.

This time she removed a small envelope.

Dominic's name was written across the front.

Inside was a photocopy of a letter.

Valentina handed it to Elena.

She read.

Dom,

If anything happens before I can sort this out, look after Valentina and the baby. Don't make them part of the family business. Let my child have the name only if the name can become something better than what we inherited.

You always told me responsibility mattered more than reputation. I'm holding you to it.

Gabriel.

Elena read the letter twice.

Then a third time.

"When did you get this?"

"After Gabriel died," Dominic said. "It was with his attorney."

"So the bracelet..."

"Was Gabriel's."

Elena looked down at Luca's wrist.

Dominic understood the question before she asked.

"The bracelets aren't identical."

He stood slowly but remained several feet away.

"May I?"

Elena hesitated.

Then nodded.

Dominic approached Luca's bassinet.

Carefully, he turned the bracelet so Elena could see the inner surface.

There was a tiny engraving she had never noticed.

DM-LM

"Dominic Moretti. Luca Moretti," he explained.

He looked toward Valentina.

"Matteo's says GM-MM. Gabriel Moretti. Matteo Moretti."

Elena's eyes burned.

Something about that tiny distinction hurt more than she expected.

Not because it proved Dominic innocent.

He wasn't.

Perhaps he hadn't betrayed her body.

But he had betrayed her trust.

"You could have told me."

Dominic's shoulders lowered slightly.

"I know."

"No. I don't think you do."

She looked at Valentina.

"And the messages?"

Valentina's face reddened.

Elena lifted Dominic's phone.

"'Our baby looks more like you every day.' Explain that."

Dominic looked genuinely confused.

Valentina covered her eyes.

"Oh."

"What?"

Valentina took out her own phone.

"Read the full conversation."

She unlocked it and handed it to Elena.

The messages were from that morning.

VALENTINA: Matteo has Gabriel's expression now.

DOMINIC: He has his father's eyes.

VALENTINA: I wish Gabriel could see him.

DOMINIC: He'd say the boy got all the good Moretti features from him and none from me.

VALENTINA: Our baby looks more like you every day.

DOMINIC: That's an insult to the child.

Elena stared at the messages.

"Why 'our baby'?"

Valentina winced.

"It's a joke Gabriel used to make."

Dominic explained.

"After I agreed to be Matteo's legal guardian if necessary, Gabriel called him 'our baby' whenever he wanted to annoy me."

Valentina gave a faint, embarrassed smile.

"He'd say Dominic was already planning the child's schools, security, trust fund, everything."

"And you continued saying it after Gabriel died?"

"Sometimes." Valentina looked ashamed. "It made it feel like Gabriel was still part of the conversation."

Elena handed back the phone.

She didn't know whether to laugh, cry, or ask them both to leave.

The message that had shattered her world had another explanation.

May you like

But the secret remained.

A secret Dominic had protected for months while withdrawing from his own wife.
