Chapter 9 - SECOND CHANCES AND HONEST CHOICES

The next several weeks changed the Moretti family in ways Elena had not expected.

Not dramatically.

Not overnight.

Real change rarely happened that way.

It arrived through meetings.

Documents.

Conversations.

Awkward apologies.

Revised contracts.

People learning to speak without assuming disagreement meant disloyalty.

Dominic officially dissolved the Heritage Initiative.

Vittorio agreed to transfer its remaining funds into Gabriel's employee trust.

Martin returned temporarily as an adviser.

Samuel handled the legal restructuring.

And Elena accepted the role Gabriel had given her.

Trustee for Matteo.

At first, Valentina seemed uncertain.

"You don't have to do this because Gabriel wrote your name," she told Elena one afternoon.

They were sitting in Sofia's backyard while Luca slept in a shaded stroller and Matteo played safely on a blanket nearby with soft blocks.

"I'm not."

"Then why?"

Elena watched Matteo bang two blocks together with immense concentration.

"Because I think Gabriel wanted his son to have family."

Valentina's eyes filled.

"He did."

Elena hesitated.

"And because Luca deserves to know his cousin."

Matteo looked up as if hearing his name.

He had Gabriel's smile.

Elena could see it now.

The same mischievous curve she'd seen countless times at family dinners.

"What about you and Dominic?" Valentina asked carefully.

Elena looked toward Luca.

"We're talking."

"That's all?"

"For now."

Valentina nodded.

"Probably wise."

Elena smiled.

"You're giving me marriage advice?"

"Absolutely not."

They both laughed.

Their relationship would never be simple.

There was too much history.

Too many misunderstandings.

But Elena no longer saw Valentina as the woman standing outside her hospital room carrying proof of betrayal.

She saw a woman who had lost the man she loved while pregnant with his child.

A woman who had allowed herself to disappear into secrecy because she believed secrecy protected her son.

In that, perhaps, she and Dominic had made the same mistake.

One evening, when Luca was nearly six weeks old, Dominic came to Sofia's house alone.

No driver.

No security team visible from the window.

He stood on the porch holding a small box.

Sofia opened the door.

"You again."

"Nice to see you too."

"What do you want?"

"To speak to my wife."

Sofia looked behind him.

"Where are the twelve intimidating men who normally follow you?"

"Two."

"Where?"

"Down the block."

"Progress."

Elena appeared behind her.

"Sofia."

Her sister smiled innocently.

"I'll make tea."

Dominic followed Elena into the living room.

Luca was asleep in a bassinet.

Dominic looked at him immediately.

"He's getting bigger."

"That's generally what babies do."

"I've missed several days."

"Three."

"I counted."

Elena sat on the sofa.

Dominic remained standing.

"Sit down. You're making me nervous."

He sat.

The box remained in his hands.

"What's that?"

He opened it.

Inside was a gold bracelet.

Elena stiffened.

Then she realized it was not Luca's.

It was Dominic's.

His childhood Moretti bracelet.

DM.

No second set of initials.

He placed it on the table.

"My mother gave this to me when I was born."

Elena touched it carefully.

"What are you doing with it?"

"I don't want Luca's bracelet to mean what mine meant."

"What did yours mean?"

"Obligation."

He leaned back.

"When I was a boy, my grandfather used to tap it whenever he talked about responsibility. The family. The name. What people expected."

Elena listened.

"I gave Luca one because that's what Moretti fathers do."

"And Matteo?"

"I gave him Gabriel's because I thought I was honoring my brother."

"Weren't you?"

"Maybe."

Dominic looked toward the bassinet.

"But I think Gabriel wanted something else."

"What?"

"A choice."

He took out a second object.

A simple silver chain.

Attached was Luca's gold bracelet.

Elena stared.

"When did you take that off him?"

"Yesterday, when you let me watch him."

"You stole our son's jewelry?"

"I prefer 'temporarily relocated.'"

She laughed despite herself.

Dominic smiled.

Then his expression became serious.

"I had something engraved inside."

Elena turned the bracelet.

Beneath their initials were three new words.

CHOOSE YOUR OWN WAY.

Her throat tightened.

"Dominic."

"I know he's a baby. He won't understand it for years."

"No."

"But I needed to."

She looked at him.

Six years of marriage stood between them.

Good memories.

Bad habits.

Tenderness.

Silences.

Mistakes.

Trust broken not by an affair, as she had first believed, but by something that could be almost as damaging in a marriage—the belief that one person had the right to determine which truths the other could handle.

"Why did you come here tonight?" she asked.

"To give you that."

"Only that?"

He hesitated.

"No."

"Then say the rest."

Dominic looked directly at her.

"I want you to come home."

Elena's heart tightened.

"But I don't want you to come home because I asked."

She waited.

"I want you to come home if you believe the home will be different."

"Will it?"

"I can't promise I'll suddenly become excellent at communicating."

"That would be suspicious."

"I can promise not to call secrecy protection."

She studied him.

"And if something frightening happens?"

"I tell you."

"If you think the truth might upset me?"

"I tell you."

"If you disagree with a decision I make?"

"I argue with you."

"Healthy."

"I thought so."

She smiled.

Then grew serious again.

"And Valentina and Matteo?"

"They're family."

"Publicly?"

Dominic nodded.

"Publicly."

Elena searched his face.

"What changed?"

"You."

"No."

She shook her head.

"Don't make me responsible for your change."

He absorbed that.

"You're right."

Again, those words.

Becoming easier.

"What changed?" she repeated.

"I got tired of being afraid that loving people meant I had to control every danger around them."

He looked at Luca.

"I can't."

"No."

"I couldn't save Gabriel from an accident. I can't guarantee nothing will ever happen to Luca. I can't guarantee Matteo will never face questions about his father."

He looked back at her.

"And I can't protect our marriage by keeping difficult things outside it."

Elena felt tears gathering.

This time she did not wipe them away.

"That is the first intelligent thing you've said in six years."

"Six?"

"Possibly five."

He smiled.

Then waited.

He did not ask again.

That mattered.

Elena looked around Sofia's living room.

She loved being there.

But she knew she did not want to spend the rest of her marriage hiding from the possibility of being hurt again.

Trust could not return because someone promised it would.

Trust returned in small evidence.

A conversation told before it became a secret.

A difficult answer given without being forced.

A choice respected.

A truth shared while it was still uncomfortable.

"I'll come home Sunday."

Dominic stared at her.

"Sunday?"

"Don't make me change my mind."

He nodded quickly.

"Sunday is excellent."

"With conditions."

"Naturally."

"No meetings during dinner twice a week."

"Three."

She raised an eyebrow.

"Are you bargaining against yourself?"

"I'm trying to impress you."

"It's working a little."

He smiled.

"And one more thing," Elena said.

"What?"

"You take the two-a.m. feeding on weekends."

Dominic's confidence vanished.

"The baby eats at two?"

"And midnight."

"And four?"

"Sometimes."

He stared toward Luca.

"Is this negotiable?"

"No."

Dominic sighed.

"I've negotiated international shipping contracts easier than this."

"Excellent preparation."

The following Sunday, Elena returned home.

Not because everything had been repaired.

May you like

Because they had decided to repair it.

There was a difference.
