Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Blitz

Valerie didn’t wait for the meeting. She summoned Alexander to a private lunch at Le Bernardin, where titans of industry ruined lives over expensive wine.
Alexander, a silver-haired Wall Street veteran in a bespoke Tom Ford suit, smiled warmly. "Valerie, sweetheart. I'm so glad you put that deadbeat ex of yours in his place. Richard would be so proud."
Valerie took a slow sip of sparkling water. "Do you think he’d be proud that you used Geneva funds to bankroll a hostile takeover against his own daughter, Alex?"
His paternal smile froze for a microsecond before returning. "I have no idea what you're talking about. Offshore banking is a labyrinth—"
"Cut the crap," she snapped, sliding the forensic audit across the tablecloth. "You authorized the slush fund that bailed out my in-laws, on the condition that they push me out and declare me mentally unfit. You wanted the holding company without getting your fingerprints on the murder weapon."
Alexander dropped the nice-guy act. He leaned back, his eyes turning reptilian.
"You're just as stubborn as your old man. But he knew when to fold. Yeah, I signed the wire. So what? It’s a questionable financial maneuver, nothing more. The institutional investors will back me on Monday. Wall Street doesn't want a traumatized, divorced single mother running a Fortune 500 company. Keep your trust fund, stay home with your kid, and don't end up like Richard."
"What did you do to my father?" she whispered, her chest tightening.
Alexander buttoned his jacket and stood up. "Corporate stress is hell on the heart, Val. See you Monday. Try not to cry in front of the shareholders."
By Sunday night, the media was having a field day. Alexander had leaked rumors about Valerie's "mental instability." Stock futures were down three percent.
"If he gets the retail investors to flip, you lose operational control, trust fund or not," Gabriel paced the floor.
Valerie looked at her son, then up at Gabriel with a predatory calm. "I’m not going to beat him with board votes. I’m going to nuke his reputation. What was in my father’s lockbox besides the trust? You mentioned patents."
"Project Phoenix," Gabriel realized, his eyes widening. "The clean energy tech your dad was developing. Alex has been trying to quietly sell it to an overseas consortium for months."
"Exactly," Valerie smiled. "If Alex sells it, he's committing fraud, because the IP doesn't belong to the corporation. It belongs exclusively to my son's trust."
On Monday morning, the auditorium was packed with shareholders and financial press. Alexander Vance took the microphone, oozing confidence.
"Ladies and gentlemen, we propose a vote to transition executive duties to myself, allowing Valerie the time she needs to recover from her... difficult personal transition."
Valerie stood up in a flawless white power suit, walked straight to the center podium, and plugged her tablet into the master projector. The murmurs died instantly.
"Before we vote," Valerie’s voice boomed over the PA system, "I’d like the Vice Chairman to explain why he siphoned capital from our Geneva branch to fund a shadow takeover against this very company. And more importantly..."
The massive screens lit up with the Project Phoenix schematics and a federal trademark registry document.
"...I want Mr. Vance to explain why he's actively negotiating the sale of this proprietary tech to a foreign government, when the intellectual property is owned exclusively by the family trust. If you vote me out today, the company's licensing rights to this tech expire at midnight. You will bankrupt this firm."
Pandemonium erupted. The institutional investors looked horrified. Alexander slammed his fist on the table. "This is a breach of confidentiality! These are private negotiations!"
"They’re evidence, Alex," Valerie said coldly. "Evidence I handed over to the SEC and the FBI three hours ago."
Right on cue, the heavy auditorium doors opened. FBI agents from the White-Collar Crime Division walked down the aisle.
"Alexander Vance," the lead agent said, pulling out handcuffs. "You're under arrest for wire fraud, corporate espionage, and breach of fiduciary duty."

As they hauled him away, Alex lunged toward Valerie, his eyes wild. "You think you won, you little brat? I just wanted a payout! The people who paid me to get you out of the way... they want something much bigger. They're coming for you!"
Valerie didn't blink. She turned back to the stunned crowd. "The board meeting is adjourned. The company is secure, and I am still your CEO."
