Chapter 5 - Scorched Earth

The drive back to Manhattan was agonizing. Valerie was trapped in an impossible checkmate. If she blew the whistle, she would avenge her father but destroy the legitimate empire he built and put a target on her son's back. If she complied, she became the very monster she had just spent months fighting.

By Sunday morning, Monroe had already initiated the squeeze.

"Valerie, Wall Street is panicking," Gabriel rushed into her office. "Three major investment banks tied to Monroe just pulled our credit lines. If we don't surrender the Scranton servers by the opening bell tomorrow, we default on our debt obligations. We’ll be in receivership."

Valerie stood up, a terrifying, quiet resolve settling over her.

"Monroe thinks he’s cornered me because he assumes I play by Wall Street's rules. He thinks I'm terrified of losing the company."

"Aren't you?" Gabriel asked.

"My father set up that trust to protect me, Gabriel, not the stock price. If I have to burn this entire empire to the ground to watch Trent Monroe choke on the ashes, I will. Get the US Attorney General on a secure line. Right now."

On Sunday evening, Valerie convened an emergency board meeting. The remaining directors were sweating through their tailored suits, fully aware of the impending credit collapse.

"Madam CEO, we are out of options," a senior board member pleaded. "If Monroe's hedge fund doesn't inject liquidity by tomorrow morning, the stock drops fifty percent at the bell. We have an acquisition offer from him on the table. We need to take it."

Valerie looked at the terrified men around her. "That offer isn't a buyout. It's a ransom note."

Suddenly, the boardroom doors swung open. To the shock of everyone, Eleanor—Valerie's mother-in-law—walked in, flanked by a high-priced defense attorney. She had made bail.

"Looks like the great corporate queen is finally out of moves," the old woman spat, a venomous smile on her face. "You wanted to play with the big boys, Valerie, but you’re all alone. My son and I sold our remaining minority shares to Monroe's fund to pay our legal fees. He owns forty-nine percent of this company now. He only needs one vote from this board to oust you and take the servers."

Valerie didn't even blink. She slowly stood up, looking at her mother-in-law with an expression of pure, unadulterated pity.

"You sold your soul to the exact same man who used you as bait, Eleanor. It’s pathetic." Valerie pulled a stack of documents from her briefcase and tossed them onto the center of the mahogany table. They bore the seal of the Department of Justice.

"But it doesn't matter," Valerie whispered, her voice carrying an icy finality. "Because the shares you just sold to Trent Monroe are already worthless."
