Chapter 2 - THE RING BESIDE THE ULTRASOUND

I removed my engagement ring.

Evan stared at my hand.

“Claire.”

I set the ring beside the ultrasound photograph.

The diamond made a small click against the glass tabletop.

It was almost funny.

A four-year relationship, reduced to two objects and one sound.

“You made your choice.”

His face twisted.

“I didn’t choose Brooke.”

“Then what did you choose?”

“The baby.”

I held his gaze.

“Okay.”

He blinked.

“Okay?”

“Yes.”

His confusion almost offended me.

“What did you expect?” I asked. “That I’d bargain with you?”

“No.”

“That I’d promise to raise your mistress’s baby?”

“Jesus, Claire.”

“That I’d tell you love conquers everything?”

“I never said that.”

“Then we’re done.”

His eyes filled.

The sight would once have destroyed me.

That night, it only made me tired.

“You can’t just erase four years.”

“I’m not erasing anything. You ended what those four years were building toward.”

“I still love you.”

A flash of fury went through me so sharply that my hands began shaking.

“You do not get to say that tonight.”

“It’s true.”

“Then your version of love is useless to me.”

He flinched.

His phone vibrated on the table.

Neither of us moved.

It stopped.

Then vibrated again.

The screen lit up.

BROOKE.

Evan flipped the phone facedown.

That tiny motion finished something in me.

I pointed toward it.

“Answer.”

“I don’t want to.”

“She’s pregnant with your child.”

“Please don’t say it like that.”

“How would you prefer I say it?”

He stared at me.

I walked to the door and opened it.

“Go.”

“Claire—”

“Tomorrow morning, my parents will call relatives who flew across the country for a wedding that no longer exists. I’ll deal with the venue, the florist, the photographer, and the caterer. You will contact your family yourself.”

“Can we talk after things calm down?”

“No.”

“You don’t mean that.”

“I do.”

He stood in the hallway looking like a man waiting for someone to hand him a softer ending.

I had none.

“I never meant to hurt you,” he whispered.

I almost smiled.

People said that when what they meant was, I never imagined I would have to watch the damage happen in front of me.

“You knew this would hurt me,” I said. “You just hoped I wouldn’t find out.”

The elevator opened down the hall.

Evan did not move.

“Is this really how you want four years to end?”

I stared at him.

“I’m not the one who ended them.”

Then I closed the door.

I stayed standing until I heard the elevator leave.

Only then did my legs give out.

I slid down the door and sat on the hardwood floor in my silk robe while silent tears ran down my face.

I did not sob.

I did not throw anything.

I did not tear the wedding dress apart.

I simply sat there and understood that the future could disappear without making a sound.

At 1:17 a.m., my phone buzzed.

Brooke.

I almost deleted the message without reading it.

Instead, I opened it.

Claire, I am so sorry. I never wanted any of this to happen. I know you hate me. I know I deserve that. But the baby is innocent, and I only want Evan to do the right thing.

I read it twice.

Then I took a screenshot.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because Brooke still worked for my company and had access to information worth millions of dollars.

Heartbreak could wait.

Business could not.

May you like

I stood, walked to the window, and looked at my wedding dress.

Then I said aloud to the empty room, “You can lose a wedding without losing yourself.”
