Chapter 5 - THE PREGNANCY TIMELINE THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The doctor estimated the pregnancy slightly further along than Evan expected.

Only several days.

Nothing conclusive.

But enough.

Evan remembered the night of his birthday.

Their first night together.

He asked Brooke about it.

She became defensive.

He backed down.

Then a message appeared on her phone from a man named Ryan.

How much longer are you going to lie about this?

Evan confronted her.

Brooke said Ryan was an ex-boyfriend harassing her.

Evan tried to believe her.

He failed.

The wedding he had destroyed began replaying in his mind.

The ring on my coffee table.

My face when he said the baby was innocent.

The certainty with which he had declared he had no choice.

For the first time, he wondered whether the choice he had sacrificed everything for had been built on another lie.

He found Ryan’s number.

They met in a coffee shop.

Ryan did not gloat.

That made it worse.

“Did she tell you the baby is definitely yours?” Ryan asked.

“Yes.”

Ryan unlocked his phone.

“I’d look at these.”

The messages were dated before Evan’s birthday.

Brooke telling Ryan she was late.

Brooke telling Ryan she was scared.

Ryan asking whether the baby could be his.

Brooke replying:

I don’t know yet.

Evan stared at the screen until the words blurred.

“You were still sleeping with her?”

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“On and off.”

“During the conception window?”

“Yes.”

Evan’s hands began shaking.

“Why didn’t you come forward?”

“Because she stopped answering me. Then I heard she was living with you.”

Evan left the coffee shop feeling as though the city had tilted.

When he confronted Brooke, she denied everything.

Then minimized it.

Then cried.

Finally, she admitted that she had been with Ryan around the same time.

“But I know this baby is yours.”

“How?”

“I just know.”

“That’s not an answer.”

“Evan, please.”

He looked at the woman for whom he had canceled his wedding.

Then he understood something terrible.

He had not actually left me because of the baby.

The baby had merely forced him to face the consequences of what he had already done.

Even if the child proved to be his, he had still betrayed me.

Even if it was not, nothing would restore him to innocence.

He called me from another number.

I answered because I was expecting a delivery driver.

“Claire.”

I almost hung up.

“Evan.”

“I need to tell you something.”

“No.”

“It’s important.”

“Is someone dead?”

“What?”

“If no one is dead, I don’t need an emergency briefing about your life.”

His breathing became uneven.

“There’s a chance the baby isn’t mine.”

I sat at my kitchen counter.

Luke was across the room reading.

He glanced up but did not move.

I felt something I had not expected.

Nothing.

Not triumph.

Not satisfaction.

Nothing.

“That sounds like something you need to handle.”

“Claire, if it isn’t mine—”

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

“Do not finish that sentence.”

“I just meant—”

“I know what you meant.”

Silence.

“You think if Brooke lied to you, then somehow the road leads backward.”

“That’s not fair.”

“No, Evan. What wasn’t fair was you cheating on me. The baby’s DNA does not change who you were before you saw an ultrasound.”

His voice broke.

“I made a mistake.”

“No. You made a series of decisions.”

“Claire—”

“I hope the child is healthy. Beyond that, your situation has nothing to do with me.”

I hung up.

Luke closed his folder.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

He waited.

I appreciated that.

Finally I said, “He thinks the baby might not be his.”

Luke’s eyebrows lifted.

“That’s complicated.”

“For him.”

“Do you want to talk about it?”

I thought for a moment.

“No.”

“Okay.”

That was it.

No secret satisfaction.

No speech about karma.

No demand that I prove I was over Evan.

Luke simply went back to reading.

That quiet trust did more for me than a thousand promises could have.
