Chapter 11 - He Was Paid

The next morning, after hours of testimony at the police station, a text arrived from an unknown number: Do not trust anyone in that family.
Not even Diane. By the following afternoon, Raymond was being held without bond, and Christopher had been released on bail, under investigation — and he called me at once.
“My dad is going to take full responsibility for all of it,” he said, desperate.
“He’s telling the prosecutors I didn’t know anything about the drugs.”
“You were standing in the room, Christopher.”
“I was only in there to keep things from getting worse for you!”
I hung up.
And a few hours later, another message came from the unknown number, and this one carried a video file.
In it, my husband stood in the hallway of his parents’ house, talking to Samuel, unaware of any camera.
And on the recording, Christopher was not a frightened man being dragged along by his father.
He was a partner discussing his cut. Nine hundred thousand dollars, Samuel said to him, laughing, for every property transaction we close. And then Samuel added a sentence that took the floor out from under me: She wasn’t the first target, and she won’t be the last.
I set the phone down and stood very still in my parents’ kitchen.
Everything I had told myself, for one last desperate day, about my husband being a weak man trapped by a powerful father — all of it dissolved.
He had not been trapped.
He had been employed.
He had been paid, handsomely, for two years, to help do to other people exactly what had been done to me, and then he had helped do it to me, and had stood in that room, and had asked me to sign.
There was no innocent version of Christopher left to grieve.

There never had been.
I had married the fiction of a man.
