Chapter 9 - Did You Agree to This

I turned to my husband, who had not moved, who could not look at me.

“Did you agree to this, Christopher?” I asked.

“Did you agree to let them do this to me?”

“Just sign, Sabrina,” he said, to the floor.

“Please.

Then we take the money and we go far away from here, together.”

I felt something in my chest break that has never fully healed, and I asked the question I most dreaded the answer to.

“How many other women were there?

Before me?”

No one answered.

Diane began, softly, to cry.

“Please, Sabrina,” she wept, “don’t destroy this family.”

“This family,” I said, “was destroyed the moment one of you turned the lock on that door.

I didn’t destroy anything.

I just stopped being the only one who couldn’t see it.”

And it was at that exact moment — as though the house itself had decided the performance was over — that a small electronic sound came from the wall outlet across the room.

It was the hidden camera, disguised as a charger, and the sound was it establishing a live connection to a server far outside that house.

Raymond’s head snapped around.

He understood, instantly, what it meant, and he lunged for it, and tore it out of the wall, and threw it to the floor and stamped on it until it broke apart.

“What did you record?” he shouted at me.

I did not answer, because I did not need to.

Whatever the camera had seen and heard in that room, it had already sent, live, somewhere he could never reach it.

The truth was already out of the house.
